@Cecile: I listened in the 80's too, at that time FMU was aert of a trio of college stations, along with WKCR and WFUV, that were almost the only alternatives to commercial programming (the less said about WBAI, the better.) But the station didn't yet have its 'identity" as we know it today, that came in the early 90's, as noted by others above.

The "only some people laugh" thing at movies reminds me of how John Waters said he could look at an audience watching one of his early movies and tell at certain points who in the audience were gay and who were not, because all the gay people would laugh at a specific line and the others wouldn't. I've seen that idea in action only once at a screening of You Can't Stop The Music during Gay Pride Week.

I get the impression that it tends to be tourists who are trying to see everything they possibly can in the limited time they have. So I can understand where the impulse comes from. That's why I make sure to set aside enough time.

@ngh: fortunately, whenever I get brief freelance work, I can pay into my pensions. Except when the job is really small. Which is a lot of the time. So my pension statement has a nice list of jobs I don't get a pension for because I was too young, and jobs that I don't get a pension for because the pay was so small. My actual accrued pension is about 25 bucks a month right now! What with those lists, the pension statement is just a slap in the face.

I've once asked a relative to take a pic of one particular painting that I loved at a modern art museum in the Netherlands. I take pictures of sculptures in museums sometimes since they are 3-dimensional and the context in which they are displayed can make a difference. But I don't get taking pictures of paintings. Surely you can just find a picture online of any famous painting that you would find in a major museum?

Regarding taking pictures at museums and galleries, I went to a few art fairs in NYC recently. Those things are so crowed sometimes the only way you can ever “make note” of a picture is to take a pic. I’d say for every 10 works I take pics of, 1 or 2 of them I will stop to take it in. The rest are mildly interesting and it’s better to make some note of the work than wonder years later, “What was that one thing?”

Also, most museums ban photos due to rights restrictions. So many times you see people taking quick shots to elude security guards. Very common practice.

I have photographed art in museums that's not famous enough to find online..and the exhibit card, for reference. Anything else is a concern for proving you've been there yourself. I hate crowded museums altogether, with or without cameras. Shuffling past art like a cafeteria line...I hate it so much. I only go to small exhibits on weekdays. No more blockbusters for me...ever. With cameras is generally worse. People jockeying for position. Ugh.

@UncleMichael: exactly. The one pic I've had taken was from an artist I'd never heard of, and a painting most people seemed to ignore.

Photos I can live with, but the people who insist on using a flash even though there is a HUGE sign right above the painting saying "No flash photography" and a guard telling them not to use a flash because the old painting can be damaged by exposure to the flash. Take a pic if you will, but if it says "no flash" then no flash, forchrissakes!

JakeGould:

The backstory is pretty funny, “Of course, one cannot discuss sex and malt liquor without a bow to Don Vultaggio and John Ferolito. These two young men from Brooklyn came up the hard way. After high school, they scraped together $200 and bought a VW bus to deliver beer to places avoided by timid truckers, stores in neighborhoods like Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant. By 1982, the pair had 25 trucks and a decade of experience delivering refreshment in these less than pastoral settings. Vultaggio and Ferolito learned what their customers wanted because they were on the street with them every day.

One day they asked themselves why they were delivering other people’s beer when they could contract to brew their own and profit as both wholesalers and brewers. In 1986, they formed the Hornell Brewing Company and introduced Midnight Dragon Special Reserve Malt Liquor.

What they lacked in marketing power, they made up for in audacity. Their first poster featured a woman sipping Midnight Dragon through a straw. The caption read, “I could SUCK on this all night.”

You didn’t need a gypsy to read those tea leaves. When women’s groups protested, Ferolito told the Wall Street Journal, “Real men like sex and sex sells beer.” In fact, 22 separate groups protested the poster. Propelled by its notoriety, Midnight Dragon sold like hotcakes with malt syrup. As a cultured touch, its cans and bottles were emblazoned with an elegant crest and Latin inscription, “Epulis Accumbere Divum” (line 79 from the first book of Vergil’s Aeneid, “To recline at the feast of the gods”). For those eager to recline, Vultaggio and Ferolito delivered their new brew by the truckload — three million cases of Midnight Dragon annually.”
