Hi Van (and whoever comes after)! I made it in.

yay!

Before The Dawn is still not on sale on DVD. Just getting that out there. And I had thought it would be an Xmas goodie for us. Oh well. I will keep an eye out, you can bet on that.

You're a dedicated trooper & professional. How quickly a week goes. I'm all ears & eagerly await your selections. A welcomed interlude from the blizzard we've had up here in VT. You guys lucked out. Whew!

......sooooo any Tangerine Dream tonight? Edgar Froese, great loss. Glad to see that Jeffrey played them. Are the legendary at this point? In my opinion, yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
Santos L Halper:

This Johnny McLaughlin LP seems to be in heavy rotation; i've heard like 5 different tracks from it in recent weeks. A good thing, mind you...

I actually followed Klaus Shulze as well way back when, when he left TD.

Yes, Santos, C&P bandmember Chris and I discussed at length whether they should come in. Their cellist was stranded out of town and I thought travel might be too difficult. Who knew! We'll pick a new date soon I hope.

Guess McLaughlin in in our collective minds. I thought of him because of a great guitar concert I saw with my husband Peter the other night--Pat Martino Trio + Larry Coryell-Vic Juris duo. Oh, there might also be some Tangerine Dream tonight.

How about a Don Bikoff follow up Irene? :)

@Polyus, thanks for reminding me-- I have a download of Olivia's new album waiting for me! She's playing Rockwood Music Hall in NYC Feb. 5th.

gongoleer:

How old is Coryell. I first saw & heard him at the Village Gate in 1968/69 as a young up & coming guitaisrt. He was amazing even then. Irene, there's an echo reverb on your mic. coming through the radio. Intentionally? I don't think so.

Actually a big reason to complain was that the subways HAD to run all night anyway to keep the tracks clear. So by Cuomo's dopey fiat, they were running empty and not letting anybody on board! brooklynpaper.com...

Are you other listeners hearing a reverb in Irene's voice.

Weird about the reverb effect. Anyone else hearing it? @gongoleer, you might just have to restart the player.

I'm guessing Iasos would know very well the difference between an Orchestra and a Symphonic Band :)
Avatar 9:39pm

That makes arithmetic sense. I figured her was in that range. Thanks. Nice choices. Relaxing. Just what I need. The reverb went away.

Hey Irene and WFMU world,
Chris from 'the cellar and point' here. So bummed we couldn't make it today.
John McGlaughlin was probably my first view into experimental instrumental music in early high school, so it's great to see us on the same show!
I heard you mention our lack of upcoming events, so figured I'd mention that this Friday a section of the group will be playing at the MET's 'Jazz and Colors' event 6:00 and 7:30. Our guitarist, Terrence McManus arranged a bunch of standards as per request. Should be great!

Van in DC:

So, groups, some of the most fantastic lineups, talent-wise. Tangerine Dream for sure. Pink Floyd, on another level. Japan. VERY underrated!! David Sylvian went on to record two incredible albums after Japan - Brilliant Trees and Gone To Earth. That latter, the double LP, just....wow. and FMU has NO IDEA. But, hey, when I get my show I can play it right? ....
Avatar 9:56pm
Van in DC:

Sorry, this track right now put my mind in mind of Sylvian & Japan, actually...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...one gets exposed to so much washed-out empty stuff put forward as 'Jazz'; is it really so much to ask to have someone w/ your knowledge & taste present it? Well - thankfully - not here!...
Avatar 10:03pm

I am wrong. Sorry. FMU DOES know who Sylvian is. And Irene has actually played him as well. I'm surprised, but pleased.

Too bad that these artists have passed on. Found out on Liz' show this afternoon that Sleater-Kinney has a new album and tour, so that's some happy news.

I first noticed them with the soundtrack to Thief. but to me they did not maintain that level. That was more like it.
Avatar 10:28pm
Van in DC:

yeah Thief was also superb.
Avatar 10:30pm
Van in DC:

And you are right - you had to backtrack for TD all the way back to like Phaedra. Going forward, they seemed to just be like a Mark Isham film soundtrack group kind of thing if that makes sense. And that is a shame because Isham did fantastic work also before...with JAPAN.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm

Hi Sean! Welcome to the waking/dreaming world. And welcome Becca! @Van, of course I've played David Sylvian in the past but just not recently. Maybe I'll dig some up for next week.
