shipp on jarrett
I have struggled long and hard to evaluate the position that Keith Jarrett’s music occupies in the hierarchy of the jazz industry. I have always felt a tremendous amount of pretense surrounding his whole universe. Of course he has some real skill, and sometimes sounds inspired. But I just can’t get past the layers and layers and layers of pretension. I’ve tried. Maybe it’s just me.

Avatar 🥁 11:23am
hyde:

i read this thing about Jarrett's Koln concert where the promoter was a 17 year old woman and somehow the piano they had was a piece of crap. Jarrett said he wouldn;t play unless they got another piano, which the woman couldn't manage. she ultimately went out in the rain and begged him to play, which he agreed to. and then on the piano that was total crap that he didn't want to play on he played the most successful record of his career. Jarrett's people only recorded it because they thought it'd be a complete disaster.

I've told my Jarrett story before, but it fits here. I went to see him at the Village Vanguard years ago, solo piano. The club was packed (many tourists, as is often the case). There was a lot of conversation. Jarret sits at the piano, starts to play, there is still some talking, he stops after a few notes. He waits, begins again, talking begins again (not all that loud, but noticeable). He stops again after a few notes. He just sits there, then starts again when it's quiet enough for him. Still some conversation in the room; he stops, gets up and leaves the stage. They had to refund everyone's admission. While I HATE talking during concerts, I was SO pissed off he didn't play for those of us who were there to hear him. He came off as a prima donna.

That (and Bobob's story) really is prima-donna-ish. Especially if the site is a jazz club.

Léo Ferré (a self-professed anarchist singer) wouldn't just stop if someone would talk, cough, or sneeze. He would point at the person and demand they leave, standing until they did. Especially if that person was a woman, he was a proud misogynist

Think we may head to the Dog Beach (Asbury Park); our 8 year old pooch has surgery in a week for squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue (she'll lose about a third of her tongue-hopefully she does well after the surgery).
Great show, Jeff, thanks!
