About to go down a rabbit hole, come find me if I'm not back for the second set...

Listening to "do nothing til you hear from me" I started to wonder if there are many covers of "Concerto for Cootie" (which has a different structure, before words were added). Guessing that only the nerdiest of the jazz nerds bypass "do nothing" for "concerto"

pretty funny album cover....she kind of looks like a madeline or eloise or which ever was a spoiled brat
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:22am
DJ Peter:

Okay this is weird: not counting Ellingtonians (Rex Stewart, Cootie away from Ellington), and one nostalgia project (Billy May), "concerto" covers don't begin until the 1960s... and a HIGH proportion of them are from German musicians or German record labels!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:22am
doctorjazz:

↳ DJ Peter @9:17
Do nothin... takes the melody of Concerto, strips out much of the harmony and arrangement to make it a pop tune. Easier to use to blow over, though (Do Nothing, that is)

Check it out, you'll be rewarded! (the lyrics of "do nothing" are kinda creepy: okay i've been spotted stepping out on you but don't believe them, i'll tell you if it's over and i'm not gonna tell you)

Okay so I've determined that there the big USA versions are from Chuck Israels National Jazz Ensemble and John Lewis American Jazz Ensemble and ofc Lincoln Center ... otherwise it is still holding that it's mostly Europeans dealing with the "concerto" (Germany, France, Finland, Switzerland) up until 1999...

part of that "minimalizer" (if I'm using the term the way you mean) is Count Basie. I think Monk got a lot of Waller through Basie (of course he heard the original I'm not saying he didn't).

It's a particular conviction of mine that the clear Ellington influence on Monk obscures the importance of Basie's influence on Monk's sense of timing and space. (Of course Monk's touch owes more to Ellington than Basie.)

timing ...i see johnson with ellington genetically grafted on for space, kind of what you're saying with harmony, i can't really see what you're saying about basie bit just my limitations

I agree with you there, as per the introduction or adoption of a lot of space in the piano parts. Originally a kind of overall musical shape of the piece happens with the piano, certainly, like he's comping in a way that plays off what the band is carrying, so you get these chord accents or stabs on the keyboard, with lots of unplayed implied stuff in the space between. Monk turns it into a wire armature....and he often ends by tapping out one single note, as though he's listening to that one last thing he's boiled down.

Check out Basie's "Honeysuckle Rose" and then Monk's... fun!

And tom tom is right, we just passed Monk's birthday!

Well, Basie was the King of Rhythm in Kansas City - Ellington of Color in NYC. Interesting to consider Monk their possible confluence...

yes...tapping out last note... that happened quite often and not a superficial coda... quite resonant
