"Later" is fairly obscure Ellingtonia: just one studio recording from the Maestro (1951), two hard-to-find concert recordings from the same year. From the two-part "Controversial Suite" (?!)

@WR...thanks for that link... i am not sure what i think of moran's art work, though his ambition can't be denied, he is certainly not a dilettante, and i think conceptuallizing jazz culturally is an interwsting thing, but i think he may be turning jazz into a monument...or making jazz monuments which maybe is more of a curse than ablessing

Yes, and I had different reaction. I found the recreated stages to be intriguing. Culture history Kitsch. Time and spaces done as Carnival Sideshow Wax Museum . The artwork of visual representation of music were abstract head scratchers. The video projection room of musician playing like they were a historic recording session (Miles Davis Bitches Brew?) I enjoyed not thinking of what they were trying to evoke but just watching them mugging for the camera while in their own moment of making music.

↳ WR @9:33
Oh right, forgot about the visual representations of music. I will say I continue to think about those stages, the absence of music, the recreations of places where art was created that only suggest what happened. So there was somehing there for me, clearly.

Since we're moving on to new releases, may I recommend two CDs I got from the Downtown Music Gallery recently? OK, thanks.
1. Kris Davis Trio, "Run the Gauntlet." Excellent tribute to six female pianists who have been role models for Davis.
2. Nicole Mitchell & Balllaké Sissoko, "Bamako Chicago Sound System." Very enjoyable mash-up of African and western instruments (+ vocals). Dr. J could play it at home without suffering repercussions.

Want to get to one of those Downtown Music Gallery shows one of these days (Tuesday nights are difficult). I have only gotten there once, the last week before the COVID lockdown.

Got up early to go get on a bus full of volunteers for political canvassing in Philly, but the organizers had too few buses and too many people showed up. So I came home and enjoyed this show instead! I'll head back out for some "Yes on Prop 1, No on Props 2-6" local canvassing later, I guess.
