While the sound isn't bad, there's some tape hiss and disc "noises" that crop up from time to time. I don't think any of them get in the way of the story, and I did my best to remove as much as I could. Still, it doesn't sound too bad, by Rocky Jordan standards.

Austin Rich:

I've been thinking about writing an essay about using modern digital tools to clean up Mid-Century Radio. I think there's an art to trying to restore these shows, and it can be a dance back and forth, between trying some things, and then trying other things. To me, the guiding principle should be to make the shows still sound good, even if that means some hiss, rumble, or other noise artifacts. When I try to remove EVERYTHING that probably shouldn't be there, too often the voices and music that does remain sounds terrible. It's a careful balance of removing and softening the things that make the sound WORSE, and improving and accentuating the things that make everything sound better. Sometimes, less is more.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Austin Rich:

The Blue Beetle on The Radio uses a lot of tropes from The Shadow, and the stories sort of ape Shadow stories. This style of radio show was very popular: The Avenger was another in this style, that sounds almost like a Blue Beetle clone, in some ways. The impact of The Shadow on radio can't be undersold. While the character was in other media, it was on the radio that The Shadow really took off, and became a phenomena.

Murray Leinster has written for magazines such as “Snappy Stories”, “Breezy Stories”, “Amazing Stories”, “Astounding Stories”, “Mystery Stories” and “Cowboy Stories”.
I wonder which category this story falls under?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Austin Rich:

↳ David Shortell @10:46
Most authors who wrote in pulps would write in many genres, to try and chase the trends, and to be able to wrote for any demand a publisher might have. George Lefferts, who adapted most of the scripts for Dimension X and X Minus One, also wrote crime fiction and adventure stories, and tried his hands at a number of genres. Authors in those days were interested in trying to cover as many genres as possible.

The convention I despise most in science fiction is “aliens who speak English”.
Murray Leinster introduced the idea of a “universal translator” in his 1945 story “First Contact” as a means of avoiding that cliché. (I like Douglas Adams’ variant, the Babel fish.) So much interstellar drama doesn’t explain, or even address, the language issue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Austin Rich:

↳ David Shortell @10:49
I really liked "Enemy Mine," mostly because the two alien races had to learn each others language, as part of the story in the film. It's not a great movie, but it has it's moments.

↳ Austin Rich @10:54
In a 1967 Fantastic Four story, Stan Lee addresses the issue thusly: “Special note: In case you’ve been wondering how all our alien characters seem to speak the same language, it’s because most of them are outfitted with automatic models of new, universally approved no-rust automatic translators! (Hooo boy!)”

In the late 60’s, Leinster wrote some promotional novels based on Irwin Allen TV shows, like “The Time Tunnel”. He had previously written an unrelated novel titled “Time Tunnel”.
