Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from August 23, 2024 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Louvin Brothers, Scared of the Blues-
\Lyrics
Let me go with you don't leave me I'll miss you I'll love you
Now that I've kissed you I'll never forget you I know it's true
If I can only tag along I'll do it to be with you
Don't make my heart believe it's long tell me you want me too
Let me go with you don't leave me I'll miss you I'm scared of the blues
Scared of the blues

Let me go with you and I'll never let you get lonesome
Let me be near you and my love is yours when you need someone
If only to be your old standby having to share your kiss
I'd rather be than left to die craving the love I'd miss
Let me go with you don't leave me I'll miss you I'm scared of the blues

This is a a bit of synchronicity - last week I started telling a story about my first trip across America fifty years ago in August of 1974. the car we were driving was only fit for a ride to the junkyard, but did that stop us? Hell no! I've been sitting on this one. Part one was on Marty McSorley last Saturday. Tomorrow night things take a turn for the worst...in a funny kind of a way I'd like to think.

Okay, here's one: In the summer of 1977, a friend and I were sleeping on a beach above Santa Cruz. When we got back to the highway in the morning, my car - a 1960 ice blue VW bug was gone. We hitchhiked to San Francisco, borrowed five dollars, then hitchhiked back to L.A. the next day. A month later I got a call from the California highway patrol. They found just the body of my VW in the Santa Cruz mountains and asked if I wanted to come and get it. I told the officer no thanks and hung up the phone.

I already had another VW - a 1968 Square Back.

I just wanted to say that I found WFMU just recently when I was at a record store and asked what they were playing.

I am so glad I discovered this station. I feel like it has restored my faith in radio and I feel like all the various shows and variety of sound match up with my personal taste and the kind of music I find truly worthwhile. It's so easy to lose faith in music in today's environment. But listening to this station has given me so much new music to listen to and so many old favorites to revisit.

My only complaint about WFMU (which I've stated before) is I hear so much great stuff I go out and buy. But then I spend so much time listening to WFMU (to hear more great stuff), I don't have time to listen to stuf in the on deck pile!

Yes, and then some. There was a gang of car thieves in the Santa Cruz mountains that focused on VW's. They would take off the body and make dune buggies a la Charlie Manson.

You've gotten us properly launched into the Week-End.

(I've seen multiple examples of dialogue set in English Country Houses in an earlier era, where the older and more traditional family members would chide youngsters for using the word "weekend" because it was a tasteless American neologism, and represented the decline of society.)
