Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from August 16, 2024 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I've been on a pastrami mission lately. I in fact toyed with flying to NYC to try Katz's. I've been to Carnegie Deli, which was marvelous, and to Stage Deli, which was so-so. Closer to home, I've never been to Langer's west of downtown LA. But my favorite pastrami remains a decidedly non-deli version at Johnnie's Pastrami on Sepulveda, just north of LAX. Thinly sliced, steamed pastrami, loaded on a French roll with a thick slab of Swiss cheese and Johnnie's sublime hot mustard. Add a side of garlic pickles and there is no better lunch to be had.

I did recently try a place in San Carlos, Refuge. The pastrami itself was spectacular, as was the bread, but the cost was excessive for the size of the sandwich. Adding insult to injury, they serve only Gulden's mustard!

Katz's (and the original Nathans in Coney Island) were regular family outings when I was a kid. Maybe I can get in to Katz on off hours some time (my attempt was on a Sunday Afternoon).
Carnegie Deli is no more.
There was a place not far from me in Joisey, Lox, Stock and Deli, liked their pastrami, but it is also no more...
Second Avenue Deli-liked it back when it was on Second Avenue, went there a few times since the move, disappointing (but they DO give a mini chocolate egg cream at the end of the meal, almost makes amends)..

I remember when Carnegie Deli closed, not too long after Stage Door, as I recall.

A short-lived restaurant in Berkeley, Delirama, attracted acclaim for its pastrami. I thought it was good, but not Carnegie- or Johnnie's-level. Suddenly they closed. When asked why, the proprietor stated that it was frustrating having the full menu when folks only ordered his pastrami! That's an odd business model.

This place *looks* good, but it's pricey, like Refuge.

I've only been to Spinasse once, as well, last time I was in Seattle, not long after the restaurant opened.

The NYC Jewish deli is no more. Katz's is an institution, but also sui generis, rather than representative. I wasn't impressed by Carnegie. When your brand is size, quality suffers. doc, I agree about 2nd Ave (no longer on 2nd Ave), it's a shadow of its former self. These days, if you want a real New York Jewish deli, you're better off driving to Connecticut.

Here's a link to recommended Jewish delis in and around Chicago. A few (not all) sound good and like they have the core delish special items.: https://secretchicago.com/jewish-delis-chicago/

In Chicago, a lot of Jewish families have moved to the "North shore" area--north of Chicago along the lake

It is impressive. Not only does it have my past addresses, it's got the common misspellings of my past addresses, too. Still, I doubt any of this would have been that hard to get for someone who really wanted it *before* the NPD breach. SSN was never meant to be a secure UUID. We used it for that anyway, and lo.

UNCLE MICHEAL, yes, for sure! Lots of excellent Jewish delis. But here in CUBA's "northern annex," you will be overwhelmed by delicious and savory offerings. And not just Cuban! Every Latin-American cuisine is well-represented here in the MAGIC CITY. When OBAMA was President, he never failed to visit a famous, family-owned Cuban eatery on his trips to Miami, VERSAILLES.
