Hopefully I can put more time into that soon. I've been a little swamped with all these gigs and jobs that have been taking priority, and there's been some family stuff. But hopefully life will settle down soon.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
Austin Rich:

Betty Callahan is, as near as I can deduce, Rogue's "semi-regular gal," who appears in many episodes. Sometimes she's a photographer / works for a newspaper, but I think the details about her vary from week to week. I think Betty started to develop as a character over time, as Rogue was initially defined as a "lady's man," more than anything. But I think they wanted to sort of "pair them off" over time, and she appears more often, usually after Rogue makes some sort of pass at another woman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Maulydaft:

"His Girl Betty"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
Austin Rich:

This episode of Rogue's Gallery is one of the better-sounding ones in the archive. Still, I did a little EQ and used a few other tools to massage it into even better quality. I have found that restoring / improving the sound of mid-century radio dramas is incredibly relaxing and enjoyable, and I like that the final product is better than what's out there, now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
Maulydaft:

It sounds great!

One of my favorite memories was watching "His Girl Friday" with my grandmother. While she didn't like it as much as I'd hoped, it was nice to share that movie with her, as it's one of my faves.

↳ Maulydaft @9:24
Has there been some other ghost (who isn't human) up there with Eugor? I know that happens at one point, but I can't remember if we've heard it yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm
Maulydaft:

oooo interesting. I haven't heard but I don't know Rogue that well and I've missed some shows you've played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Austin Rich:

Unlike the episode of Rogue's Gallery that we just heard, this particular episode of Rocky Jordan has the WORST sound of almost any episode in the archive. I used at least three different audio tools to help improve this one, and then used every trick I know to make it more presentable. I'm actually very shocked at how good this version sounds, considering how bad the original is. You'll hear more about this at the talk break after the episode.

Ahem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Maulydaft:

Yeah this episode is really silly... and that "Russian name" ???? !!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Maulydaft @9:33
The original LP Scrape on this one sounds AWFUL. I've never actually listened to this one all the way through, because of the sound. (Until I fixed it.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
yerfriendpaul:

Love the narration and the brawl in the background
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
Austin Rich:

You will hear some of the voices and actors occasionally swallowing some of their "hard consonants." Those are the moments when the original sound was the worst.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
Maulydaft:

I have a high tolerance for noise. I listen to almost anything if the story is good. This episode is high quality in my book :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Maulydaft @9:39
I usually have a pretty high tolerance, too, and I might sit through something if I have no other option. But if I can make it sound better, why not help everyone? I think modern listeners appreciate it, as they are used to such pristine sound on modern radio dramas.
Avatar 9:42pm
Imaginos:

↳ Maulydaft @9:39
I have a high noise tolerance from past experience with shortwave
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm

I miss my shortwave radio. I used to listen quite often as a youth. I think my sister now has the same one I used to have. At least, she did...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Austin Rich:

I think you could hear that "rumble" along with the LP Scrape in that last little section. That rumble is VERY prominent in a number of parts of the source recording, and eliminating it was the main project for improving the sound on this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Austin Rich:

Hopefully all the "swallowed hard consonants" aren't too distracting.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

↳ Mr Fab @10:15
There's not a lot of Marx Brothers radio, unfortunately. But Groucho had a long career hosting, You Bet Your Life, and I think the other brothers appear occasionally. But all the brothers don't appear on much radio, unfortunately.

I bet Austin will have to do some incredible restoration on those Weird Circles! I've only heard less than good shows...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Austin Rich:

Looks like Groucho was on "You Bet Your Life" from 1947 - 1960. (It looks like he hosted RIGHT UP TO 1960, but didn't do any in 1960.) Considering the early 60's is often cited as "the end of Old Time Radio," him quitting that show must have played a part in that timeline...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Maulydaft @10:18
You are correct; some Weird Circle episodes are not great. But some sound surprisingly good, considering.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Austin Rich:

After the MAJOR success of The Shadow on the Radio, there were a number of copy-cat superhero characters who had a few gadgets and worked outside the law. Often, they had the ability to "hide" or become invisible in some way, and often the stories lead to a huge punch-out, with a "crime doesn't pay" / populist message. (Superman on the radio sort of fits this forumula at first.) There are a lot of shows like this, many of them not great, or just direct copies of others, where they re-use stories, etc. There's a real populist bent to these stories; it takes a people's hero, and not organized government or police, who save the day from corporate thugs and businesses that use mafia tactics. It's a long way from the more fascist formula that persists in a lot of modern comics.

It reminds me so much of "The Twilight Zone," that I was instantly hooked when I first heard it. I think the real key is the work of George Lefferts and Ernest Kinoy, the two gents who adapted almost every story for this show. They give a sort of "style" to the series that might not be there, otherwise.
