More evidence of Rogue being a bit of a jerk: he thinks the shopping habits of the different genders is prime "comic" material.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm
Austin Rich:

As I was preparing this episode, it sounded a little "slow" to my ear. But when I tried to speed it up - even by a very tiny amount - it sounded too fast. So I think it is "slow" in one sense, but only in the most academic definition of the word. I wonder if this is a flaw in the original broadcast of the show?

I was trying to remember if there were other stories we've aired that had a "circus" motif. I feel like there have been others, but I'm having trouble putting them to mind right now.

Ooh! I was watching While the City Sleeps this weekend with Thomas Mitchell (he played Uncle Billy in It's a Wonderful Life), and I learned that Mitchell was the first actor to play Detective Columbo on stage. The play was written by the team that created the TV show. Thought that was amazing.

The sound on this original recording of this show was not great. I used an audio enhancement tool to make the vocals more clear, and separate from the backing tracks. The sound is not great, still, and there are spots where the vocal tracks do get lost in the other sounds. But this is more listenable than the raw version that's floating around online.

As is the case on the Simpsons (and many other shows), this kid / child is most likely voiced by an adult, who made a career voicing children (and other voices). A well-trained voice actor can not only do children's voices, but can show you the difference between a five year old, a 7 year old, and a 12 year old.

You can hear more of that "rhythmic noise" on the soundtrack, that is common on these Rocky Jordan episodes. I've tried to eliminate them as best I can, but sometimes it removes the music, or SFX. So I do my best to balance removing the noise with keeping the presentation "listenable."

One of my problems with the CBS Peanuts specials was the use of (inept) child actors. Adult voice actors would've been more appropriate.
The strip's appeal was its absurdity of ostensible children speaking in the manner of adults.

Austin Rich:

All of our features tonight - save X - Minus One - had awful sound, and required a little bit if "repair" to make them more listenable. They didn't sound "BAD" as they were; certainly you could listen through the grit. But I would like these shows to be enjoyed by people in 2024, who are used to hearing clearer recordings and shows. That being said, I try to balance "restoration" with "is this too far away from the recording that was made of this broadcast." Certainly, the original recordings aren't going anywhere, but it would be even better to have the option to listen to a better version, or the "original."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Austin Rich:

↳ David Shortell @10:19
I have to agree. While the idea was that it would be "charming" to have real children doing the voices, I think it would have been better to have pro voice actors. The actor that plays Sally in particular is GRATING, in that her pacing is just TERRIBLE. Because she's very young, and isn't an actor yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
yerfriendpaul:

↳ David Shortell @10:19
Hi David! Big Peanuts fan here. I respectfully disagree. I think the real children’s voices give the Peanuts specials their unique charm. There’s a cuteness that adults can’t replicate in my opinion. Love Linus’s voice in particular

When I recently saw the 1968 broadcast of that play, "Prescription: Murder" (Peter Falk's first time in the role), I was amazed at the differences from the later series--such as the fashions, the crime jazz score and Columbo's neat appearance. He only wears the trenchcoat in one scene!
In one scene he completely drops his nice guy act and yells at a suspect, really giving her the third degree!
