Hi! This program will begin in the morning. Soon. Looking forward!

If you aren’t familiar, "Chris in the Morning" is Cicely, Alaska’s ONLY disc jockey. He has total freedom to say or do anything that crosses his mind, on the air, and plays whatever his whim tells him to. It’s wild. As in, Wildness. You know, compared to big corporate radio, anyway.

As far as I'm concerned, this is what commercial radio is supposed to sound like. It’s big and bold, and very, very messy. In a good way, like Chris, taking the art of the overshare to a whole new level, or leaving the microphone on, so we can hear he's singing along.

If you heard my last mix... this one will be a bit different. Chris Stevens is a very different DJ, and KBHR is a totally different format. I love them both, just for different reasons. You can find out more at: awphooey.com

Looking forward to getting started in the morning... See you then! Jon

When you were talking about this project Jon, I somehow never picked up that it was based on a TV show. Guess I was too concerned about the logistics of it all! Not familiar with the show, so I was wondering who is doing the DJ voice, but OK, now I get it!

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:41pm

Fab, I bet you heard that edit. Wasn't mine. If I had to guess, I'd say the show's editors had to splice in a couple of words from an alternate take and no one noticed because no one watched tv with headphone on, back then

Mr Fab:

↳ postconsumer @12:48
Nope, never heard it before.
Maybe a regional/underground thing? Pretty wacky song. Maybe Dr Demento played it? But I don't recall it.

Def lots of stuff I did love here today in my younger years: Miriam Makeba, Latin Playboys, Eno/Cale, oldies like Kingsmen. Did this TV show actually play all these songs?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
postconsumer:

A lot of his playlist is just SO familiar to me, after years of watching this show and listening to the soundtracks. and of course I was familiar with a lot of it from before the show even, but still, it was interesting to look up some of these records, during post production, and learn about them in their original context. That's a big part of the reason it's fun to do this in the first place.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
postconsumer:

↳ Mr Fab @12:53
Much of it, yes! The program was notorious for having a great soundtrack, and then replacing it all with stuff that really wasn't, and then bringing some of it back online, but not all of it, and then a different selection of songs, overseas, or on DVD. It's been maddening. As a fan.

Well, this is odd!

And we're up to 1993. Thought we would be getting mostly '80s stuff - so this show ran for a while, eh? .
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:24pm

I was on for six years in the early nineties. For this mix I just played music that got played on the show, or songs I imagined Chris playing to fill the gaps. And since he's djing back in 1995 or earlier, I kept my choices to anything prior to 1995.

We lost a few songs in the confusion. Sorry, everyone. It's my fault. Apparently if you have even a second between songs (and each segment ends with a fade), the system thinks it's time to switch to another record. The full mix will archive.

There are so many christmas records, and some really good ones, that it seems a shame that we only hear them once a year. I like these non-seasonal seasonal shows.

I was thinking that, too. Sometimes Christmas in July is way more satisfying than December, when the music starts to get repeated too much

So was this show set in the radio station, like WKRP?

It was set in the fictional town of Cicely, Alaska. The station storefront is on the Main Street.

Many fans feel that while Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) stars, Chris Stevens (John Corbett) functions as the narrator of the show, almost. He really bings the town together, anyway. I tell you what. 🫎

Radio Spirits on Sirius XM has "Christmas in July" programming every year where only program episodes featuring Christmas themes are broadcast.

The really popular opinion though is that the residents of the town are the star of the show. I'd really recommend you check it out! I usually tell people to start with an episode called Spring Break, if you're not sure you want to invest the time, at first.
