Quentin Tarantino has hijacked my mental imagery behind so many songs - I don't hate it though :) I can't hear this song without thinking of Butch Coolidge singing along in his car.

It took me by complete surprise, in my teens and twenties. I was used to tv being of no interest. My Dad insisted I watch and when I sincerely enjoyed it, the two of us bonded over the watching of every episode. I thought of him a lot while making this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am

↳ Song: "The Boxer" by "Simon and Garfunkel"
I listened to this album after school in the early 70s. It was my brother's and had to be careful to put it back in the sleeve and the jacket properly or he'd get mad. I sang along even though some of the lyrics went over my young head.

Yes, I loved the surrealism of it. For me, it was the perfect amount of surrealism - Where Twin Peaks was a little much for my appetite. What strikes me about Northern Exposure, was that cool little radio station. I always admired it and wanted to have one just like it. When I would see empty buildings with large windows facing the sidewalk, I'd think - Man, that would make a great spot for a radio station! Now, thanks to WFMU's Sheena's Jungle Room, I have that ground floor radio studio surrounded by windows in my home, like Northern Exposure impressed on me. :)

😂

I just turned 50. I agree about the surrealism. It walked the line on a lot of things like that. In some ways it was a pretty straightforward little tv program. In others, it was a hot mess. And more importantly, it rises above both with its depiction of community, not just tolerance but empathy, and the overarching theme of the power of change. I've been doing a lot of thinking about this.

postconsumer, you'd appreciate an interesting chance encounter Mrs Barno and I had yesterday. We were trying out a new restaurant above a downtown Akron Jazz Club. The club's show was cancelled at the last minute. An elderly man had come for the show, but since it was cancelled he bellied up next to us at the bar, and ordered dinner. He nd I started chatting, it turns out he's from San Francisco - visiting family in Akron over the weekend. After an bit of time chatting over our meals, I ask if he ever listens to KPFA. His eyes lit up and he said, "THAT'S MY FAVORITE RADIO STATION" and explained that he'd been listening to it online since he's out of town. He was thrilled that I knew about it. He went on to explain how diverse the station is - and they play some really weird programs at night. I asked if he was referencing "Over the Edge?" He said, YES! How do you know this?!?! It was funny and special - I thought you'd appreciate it.

That's the beauty of this series, if I may say so myself. I made it with great respect for the fans (as I am one), and that was especially on my mind for part one, Cicelian Four Seasons, but it's also an exercise in, idk, "meta radio?" 😆, and it was a chance for me to really flex my editing muscle. I'm pleased to note that practically none of the thousands of edits are audible. I really started having fun with this episode. Not just the music, but also crafting what Chris said, and shaping that mood...
