coelacanth∅:

does anyone say Cecil was a "starving artist" in the latter 1/3 of his life?
i should hope not, by then. he worked constantly and was world-famous, eventually given some degree of the recognition he deserved. i hope he was very comfortable by the last few decades of his life.

Excellent show! Nice curating of this period of time in our musical life, and recordings that are new to my ears. Thank you!!!

WHOA!! This reminds me of a solo that Wm. did on the old Stork Club - in the control room with just a humble mike on his bass - sawing away, blowing my mind! He didn't even want to bother with the studio. What a great guest, what a great player!! Thank you Jeff!!

Wasn't Cecil ripped off by an assistant in the last years of his life? I remember reading an interview about it, and reporters kept asking him about the money, and he would talk about combining poetry with music or something. He wouldn't say a word about losing the money. It was priceless.

Hard to believe you barely got out of the 80's with this show!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am

The contractor ripped him off, @LG, to the tune of almost $500,000 -- prize money from a Japanese award he'd received for lifetime achievement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am

yes i remember that Gregory

Cecil, a starving artist? Maybe eons ago when he was a young man, but in his final years, he must have been comfortable, at least for a while. He did receive one of those very generous MacArthur "genius" grants, as did Ornette.

I read he lost $500,000 to a contractor working on his house, ripped off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am

Is there an archive of that perf, @Stork?

Yes, t-tape archive somewhere in Jersey City, I'm gonna get serious about salvaging some stuff.
Avatar 🥁 11:36am

@Jeff, once we buy the house, we'll have to come up with $400,000 to repair and renovate it. I just cannot live with that backsplash!
(I have been waiting my life to use that line after hearing it in hundreds of real estate shows.)

Maybe if we all sell some of our LPs, and CDs...?
Avatar 🥁 11:38am
Listener Gregory:

Well, I would calculate that is about 3,000 items and we would get... (sound of adding machine)... $225 for them. It's a start!
Avatar 11:38am
Howlin' Wolfgang:

That last comment really got garbled - again: if I ever get my hands on that old dat-tape archive again, i'm gonna damn well start to rescue stuff.

LG, currently, it would depend on the mix of LPs to CDs. LPs right now can sell for a bit of cash. CDs now, pretty much have to give away (until the upcoming "CD revival").
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:43am
doctorjazz:

(you also have to be willing to sell one by one, not to a dealer, of course)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:45am

Yeah, the kitchen has the contractor's work written all over it, like when they flip a rental property @Listener Gregory
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:45am
doctorjazz:

I may have to start thinking about that, if I ever retire and downsize. The LPs and CDs would be the limiting factor (probably why I'll wind up staying where I am).

Gerry from Miami:

The ripoff story is true. But I think he was doing OK before the grant was awarded. Maybe other listeners have more detailed information. Saw Cecil at Royce Hall, UCLA, late 70s. Raphe Malik, David Ware, forget who on drums. No bassist, I think. Too long ago. But I attended this concert with my friend, many-time Down Beat Magazine Critics' Poll and Readers' Poll winner on flute, James Newton. We got to go into the dressing room afterward where Mr. Taylor was desperate for a menthol cigarette. The whole band was exhausted from a very intense set. I can attest that most of the audience was as well.

As I'm looking at the photos of Cecil's place, I'm getting excited. The fourth floor would be perfect for holding loft concerts. Jeff, you come up with the $2m, I'll come up with the $.5, and Doug will supply the renovation costs. Deal? Call me when you're ready. Also, fantastic show! Thanks.
