Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
Hi, WR, HyperDose, Pauly from Clifton, Wendy del Formaggio <3, Carmichael, Chop Scott, Zach1028, and chresti — here's wishes for a better year to all of us!
Gaylord — Courtney Edison (the Codger) wanted me to thank you for making a special appearance at his New Year's Eve bacchanal at the poutin' shanty. You sang "Auld Lang Syne" in such a rich baritone. Courtney wanted to know what was in the "mocktails" you were downing incessantly?
Can Courtney substitute kerosene for Sterno? We have lots of that in the shanty.
8:11pm
Mr C:
Happy New Year Gaylord! To a brighter tomorrow and a better day for all of us...keep the information and inspiration alive in 2021. It helps get us through.
Happy New Year & First Sunday of the roaring '20s Gaylord & All People of This Fields ! Yo JOOLS! Hi Wendy! Franco! northguineahills! chresti ! Cheers ! And...Thank you for these comforting audio delights, Sir G !
8:13pm
Carmichael:
A decidedly folkie tone to the festivities thus far, which is a good thing.
@Wendy Fair is fair!
@Gaylord I was reading that Times article about the closing of Maxwell's and that you did a DJ set for the event. Very cool you got to be a part of the celebration. :)
Gaylord, technology can be uppity at times. (Former TV production person here) I always found it helpful to threaten a recalcitrant piece of equipment with a hammer. It's cathartic, if nothing else. ;)
Zebra trucks! I have a memory of them from childhood, maybe from the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, which I have just confirmed is STILL there! Who knew?!
Franco, of course management frowns on actually damaging expensive equipment, but the equipment doesn't know that. And sometimes you might actually have to give a cranky camera or tape machine a mild therapeutic whack on the side.
@PMD: I didn't know Ken uses the song for some purpose.
8:32pm
Alison Porchnik:
Hi Gaylord. I am listening but not commenting. I am making another batch of tahini cookies, however. They go like hotcakes, if hotcakes were made of tahini.
Snayle, we probably did! I'm 46, and went when I was 3-5 years old. I don't think I went after that, though, which is odd, because it wasn't that far away.
@Gaylord it was John Allen the other morning, magical three hours of piano. yes I had to ask her the exact time and day that it was and yes she remembered.
Watched the Bee Gees doc. last night. Very engaging, covering a lot of unexpected territory. I'm not a huge fan, but they are absolutely unavoidable on the pop landscape. Tears were shed.
@Irwin Thanx! Not sure why but I want it to be great before going in. Probably bc it feels like all I heard when I was a kid were the Brothers Gibb. Good memories.
My $.02 on the Bee Gees doc: 1) should have been multiple episodes 2) want at least an hour of early (Aussie?) B&W videos 3) the director nailed it at the close with that last little bit of performance from the ‘80s or ‘90s I think?
I'm glad you announced "Zebra Trucks" becaue otherwise I'd've thought your transmission to the station or their own studio to transmitter link had gone down. I've also wondered for years whether that was from a circus parade LP, or just a single. So thanks to Wendy for confirming that zebra trucks are a real thing.
Oh my, Gaylord - wow... I'm so sorry - gosh still have Comateens' vinyl - ... Gosh,,,, how sad.
I was robbed at gunpoint after I left an OMD show in NYC...lived to tell about it and they have a special place in my '80's heart...
NYC was a wonderland in so many ways back in those days...Cheers & Salute all who survived the '80's in NYC @Gaylord & @Gina & & & & ! Rock, Pop, Synth Soldiers one and all ! :D
NYC(particularly Brooklyn & Queens) 2008-13 was a special time, at least for me. Still so much weirdness & cheap fun to be had. Maybe it’s still the same, hope so. Some of my best memories.
Julie absolutely. the ratio varies though.
in my world (dividing into ...0 decades) 2010>2020 has been the best decade since the 1970s; but that may be because i've listened to virtually no "mainstream" radio in this period, and all the total crap played on the jukebox at the bar is outweighed by good selections.
Happy new year Gaylord and all. I'm late to the board but I've been listening and digging it the most, as the colorful phrase had it. A low bar but here's to a better year.
@julie - that's the thing - nobody knows what NYC will be like when it "comes back". then again, it has always had ways of surprising me long after I thought I had given up all hope
Bandcamp has been a game changer for me. It's never been more obvious there is TOO much music. @Wendy I have learned that the haagen daz near me will deliver sundaes. It's very exciting.
NYC was awesome 2000-2007 was awesome, then all of favorite venues and galleries started to close. A few opened up further afield in Queens and Bushwick to keep the culture going. but after 2007, Manhattan was mostly dead to me. When I was working in DT Brooklyn, I'd go months w/o seeing Manhattan. Occasionally to go to the Lincoln Center, Gugenheim, the Met, and the Whitney. DMG was worth a trip as well. Most of the art galleries worth anything were mostly east of the East River (or west of the Hudson).
@Gaylord -- oh no -- i am so sorry about your friend, i had no idea . . . i remember The Comateens from way back, a couple i know who have lived in Hoboken for only the past 15 or 20 years get a kick out of the video for "Get Off My Case," they don't recognize the Hoboken train terminal (same thing happened when i watched "Stranger Than Paradise" with them)
A little bit harder to pull that off with Mrs. Miller, though, @phat. I have her stuff, too, courtesy of my parents. And Mariano & the Unbelievables, who need way more WFMU play.
Gaylord i will do that. this was a pied pipers>June Hutton>Jo Stafford exploration but i must've heard her before. (somehow that whole thing began with research on the ondioline!)
...maybe not that though.
9:56pm
phat:
@Dean i don't know Mariano and the Unbelievables. But that name makes me think I should.
Thank you, Gaylord. <3
If this song's dedication means you are missing someone, then I am sending you extra love. Aww heck, I'm sending you extra love anyway. <3
