This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

great lineup on this mystical Connors record - Cecil McBee, Gary Bartz, Herbie Hancock, the mysterious U.B.F. singers... B-side of course has a track entitled "Give the Drummer Some"

Hello Evan and Explorers! Making a new curry recipe, so will be listening but not commenting for a while. Looking forward to some rumba action with Miguelito Valdez!

Atempting to curry favour?

I'm not familiar with Norman Connors, but that's a hell of lineup....and a hell of a track

@Shaw: this is the only Connors-as-leader record I know, to be honest. Just got his second, Dark of Light, but haven't heard it yet. mostly familiar with him as a sideman, particularly his great work on Archie Shepp's Magic of Juju
Avatar 7:21pm
Flash Strap:

he also played on more than a few Pharoah Sanders records
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm

Oh nice! I've definitely heard him on some Shepp and Sanders records then. This is killer

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
Little Danny:

I've never heard any English-language versions, either
Avatar 8:00pm
Flash Strap:

Both Valdes and Cugat recorded vocal versions (Spanish) but I don't know if Morales wrote them or just the music, to be honest
Avatar 8:04pm
Flash Strap:

Cavallaro recorded Voodoo Moon more than a few times, including for a pretty ubiquitous LP, WIth That Latin Beat, but the 78 version is the best and most wacky, with that Whirling Dervish quote and all the piano fireworks
Avatar 8:05pm
Flash Strap:

amazing version from Valdes here, deep vocals and heavy vibes
  8:05pm
northguineahills:

As J Masis would say, “Weirdness have you”, I have the last rekkid.
Avatar 8:06pm

which one NGH?
Avatar 8:09pm

this is the flip side of the Enlloro disc from this set, but I won't be able to resist playing the A-side of disc 2 as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
Little Danny:

Yeah that Cavallaro 78 version was great!
Avatar 8:12pm
Flash Strap:

god i love vocal versions of Tabu, the "Ochun, Ifa..." section is so magical
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
Little Danny:

Wow, I'm guessing you played that version of "Taboo" before here but that performance kind of blew my mind. Pre-Ritual of the Savage, too (or any Baxter exotica). The lushness.
Avatar 8:15pm
Flash Strap:

Percy would go on to build a 10" (Carnival Rhythms, 1952) and an LP (Delicado, 1955) around these 2 sides
Avatar 8:16pm
Flash Strap:

@LD: yeah, I've heard some pretty amazing voc. versions of Taboo before (incl. some thanks to you, if I recall), from this very period even, but that one blew my mind as well! pretty new to me, actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
Little Danny:

I love it, and all of this set.
Avatar 8:19pm
Flash Strap:

the only one that comes close is the Lecuona Cuban Boys version I guess! but Valdes & Machito really bring something special to it
Avatar 8:22pm
TDK60:

Is this Mittoo like ska-calypso?
  8:23pm
northguineahills:

@Evan: Carmen Carvello. (And the Dinosaur reference was to “Freak Scene”.)
Avatar 8:24pm
Flash Strap:

I guess more like skafrocubanismo
Avatar 8:24pm
Flash Strap:

@NGH: nice
  8:25pm
northguineahills:

Ok, I haven’t heard this Peter Tosh before. How is that possible?
Avatar 8:27pm
Flash Strap:

maybe because he's credited as Peter Touch! idk it feels like young Tosh has a lot of overlooked sides scattered hither and yon
Avatar 8:28pm
TDK60:

Cuban influence. of course, need to pay closer attention.
Avatar 8:31pm

there are many ways to pay attention. you're perfect just as you are

Avatar 8:44pm
TDK60:

LPS were introduced in about '49? I'm guessing..
Avatar 8:45pm
Flash Strap:

the covers to those 78-booklets are just so well-designed, super graphic, amazing bold colors, I just love them
Avatar 8:46pm
Flash Strap:

supposedly the very first was '48, so yeah you're spot-on TDK
Avatar 8:47pm
TDK60:

Yeah, I have some old classical 78s (that I don't know what to do with) and the jackets have real artistic merit.
  8:48pm
northguineahills:

@Doug: not to be confused w/ the band, Caroliner.
Avatar 8:50pm
still b/p:

Cover art/design from back in the 78 day....The name has to be mentioned: Jim Flora.
Irwin's evangelism prompted me to look at more and more of Flora's output.
Avatar 8:52pm
Flash Strap:

Hi B/P! yeah Jim Flora's great, slightly tarnished (for me) by a deep antipathy to the designer Spike, a ubiquitous figure in the 90s space-age pop revival's look
Avatar 8:54pm
Flash Strap:

but to emphasize, Flora's amazing: londonjazzcollector.files.wordpress.com...

I've three or four different Yusef performances of this. This is the most smoldering.

Doug Schulkind:

Gant is using mallets here to devastating effect.
Avatar 9:15pm
Flash Strap:

so beautiful, ecstasy
Avatar 9:16pm
TDK60:

Nice when a piece allows for the drummer to get into the sound of the drums, in addition to the great beats here.
Avatar 9:19pm
TDK60:

and a percussion personal peeve is avoided here: cymbals are used sparingly. Yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Doug Schulkind:

The gorgeous Mr. Gant is still with us at 89.
Avatar 9:22pm
Flash Strap:

wow!
Avatar 9:24pm
Flash Strap:

I'd have like to hear Herbie turn to bass clarinet a little more often, to be honest. great sounding instrument. and Philly Joe Jones doing great work again here, next to Rae's lovely vibes
Avatar 9:26pm
TDK60:

I once asked a drummer I was playing with (bassist in rock bands) if he might perhaps, pretty-please, play the cymbals less. He said "No." Now that I think of it, all the drummers I've played with said "no" to my plea.
Avatar 9:29pm
Flash Strap:

ya gotta give the drummer some, TDK, but some of what? i guess in your case it's unwanted cymbals
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
coelacanth∅:

TDK if you'd had to've asked me at all, i would've said sure lets try that
🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm

I think you played some other track off that Johnny Rae / Mann record before. Great record. I messed up not buying the reissue that came out in 68.
Avatar 9:33pm
Flash Strap:

I've played every track but one of that record, and Sorimao I've played twice! it's really a nice LP & I can't resist its easy charms and exotic vibes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm
coelacanth∅:

i've left shows by bands that i generally liked a lot because of too much cymbal.
it's standard, so most drummers never consider any other way.
Avatar 9:36pm
TDK60:

Coel, by the '90s so many louder type rock bands had drummers slashing away /all/ the time, that I too needed a breath of air. Don't get me wrong folks, I too believe we have to give the drummer some.
Avatar 9:37pm
Flash Strap:

this record is so damn solid all the way through, hits hard and swings deep
Avatar 9:37pm
still b/p:

Sometimes, when it catches the attention in certain songs, the cymbal surfeit seems...unhelpful and inadvisable and sooo by-the-ham-fisted-numbers, and strange to have become so ordinary and familiar in its plain excess.
Avatar 9:39pm

I can only agree, still b/p. / Flash, this Machito/Mann is a gas.
