there is a large black population in coastal Colombia, and thus a huge & ongoing African influence on Colombian music generally, but this Machuca material seems to take it a bit further into murky territory of heightening the African-ness in a variety of odd exotic ways that are both organic and manufactured to a degree. a real gnarl of syncretism
