So, we're going full hippocampus tonight? (greek literary nerds will get the joke.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm
Sam Segal:

Horse Phish is back on the menu, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
chresti:

Hi Sam and fish headed horses!
Avatar 10:07pm
northguineahills:

I saw Phish once, I wasn't into them at the time (I was 19). But my gf's friend got us some good <redacted>. All the kids from the rainbow festival came out (it was free on campus).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Sam Segal:

I am not proud to love Phish, but it something you fine people need to know about me. Welcome, Chresti!
  10:08pm
Dean:

Finally? By "serious music" you must mean The Wire and its ilk?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
chresti:

I've never heard phish, I don't think.
  10:09pm
Dean:

chresti: You never listened Friday nights on KPFK to Thursday Lunch? Played them all the time.
Avatar 10:09pm
northguineahills:

(full disclosure, I don't own a Phish album, but have many Dead)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
chresti:

I haven't listened to KPFK since the late 70s, early 80s.
Avatar 10:12pm
northguineahills:

Although, my sempai, dj olive, played many times at bonnaroo w/ Billy Martin, and Phish always headlined....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
chresti:

In '95 I was listening to KXLU, KUSC, mostly.
  10:16pm
Dean:

Phish were around *way* before '95. Can't say Thursday Lunch was on as early as '83, but they were playing early Phish shows.
Avatar 10:16pm
northguineahills:

@Dean: "The Wire" My friends and I in uni used to label The Wire as, "Greybeards", back in 90s. (They got better, and I still read them). (I'll be a greybeard in next half decade)
  10:17pm
Dean:

I am not a fan of The Wire. Bad writing, not always bad opinions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Sam Segal:

@Dean, Wire readers is the kind of person I had in mind for "Serious Music Heads." (No disrespect toward Wire readers. I have subscribed over the years). For example, a few years ago, I read a piece in The Wire where one of the editors described how they'd come around to liking the Grateful Dead. I am calling it now...a few years from now, there's going to be a similar critical re-evaluation of Phish.
  10:21pm
ian:

phish is such a guilty pleasure for me, but the guy who turned me into them was a college educated musician, that's all I need to know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
chresti:

Like a Vegas show??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Sam Segal:

Ian! Thank you so much for validating this experiment in broadcasting Phish in this context. I am already much less embarrassed knowing there's another Phish fan out there.
Avatar 10:24pm
northguineahills:

I have no guilty pleasures, (as UM says). I'm a serious nimrod music head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Sam Segal:

Exactly, Chresti. Modern Phish performances have been criticized as being basically Vegas shows. But I think they have also sort of heard that criticism and tried to push the limits a bit more over the past couple years. Haha, I can't believe I pay this much attention to the online critical discourse around Phish in the year 2020.
  10:25pm
mr. elliot in DC:

As I expected inane lyrics white boy funk chops. Jesus what do you people hear in this band? Night.
  10:25pm
Dean:

To put this in perspective, I spent some time--say, a year or more--reading The Wire, as I did a couple audiophile magazines and Wine Spectator. After a year, there is nothing more one can say about music/stereo equipment/wine that hasn't already been said. When they're not positively irritating (Ben Watson comes to mind), they're boring.

Again, Thursday Lunch was promoting these guys and others (Leftover Salmon, for instance) long ago, and doing it well. I wasn't at the time a devoted Dead fan, but man, I heard some great stuff on that show decades ago.
  10:26pm
Dean:

I also have a friend from Vermont who saw them when they were wee tots.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Sam Segal:

The jam on this one really goes places. I think it could convert the Phish skeptical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
chresti:

They're a Dead tribute band of sorts?
  10:30pm
ian:

haha chresti cutting right to the chase.
  10:31pm
Dean:

As opposed to...an Allman Brothers tribute band? Phish never sounded that much like the Dead to me.
  10:32pm
ian:

c'mon, this stuff right here is very dead like
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Sam Segal:

They're definitely pretty Dead influenced, but I think they pull from some other streams of rock 'n' roll as well...there's Zappa, there's a pornographic funk, Allman Brothers (as Dean says)...even a Talking Heads quality on some tunes.
  10:32pm
Dean:

Nobody has a monopoly on jamming.
  10:33pm
ian:

I don't know enough about music to articulate it, but this guitar and the quiet groove reminds me a lot of the dead
  10:33pm
Dean:

Talking Heads? How quaint.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Sam Segal:

Not a Talking Heads guy, Dean?
  10:34pm
ian:

maybe tons of bands sound like this but the dead are the most well known
  10:36pm
ian:

I like listening to this stuff when I'm working on the computer. like Brian eno.
  10:37pm
Dean:

Sure, they're laying back and finding the next direction. Again, that gesture doesn't belong to the Dead. Before this, though, they were accelerating through a more typical rock 'n' roll jam, which the Dead often eschewed, as I hear them.

I like *one* Talking Heads song. The first single, which I own. The rest? No. They tanked immediately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Sam Segal:

Haha I love the strength of that Talking Heads take!
  10:38pm
Dean:

This right here @10:37 sounds *nothing* like the Dead! More like late '70s prog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Sam Segal:

Trey's sounding totally fried out. Next level stuff right here.
  10:39pm
Dean:

And don't get me started on Eno.
  10:39pm
ian:

a lot of people like me that only know "classic rock" from whats on the radio, only have the dead as a reference
  10:39pm
Dean:

This is Krautrock more so than Dead.
  10:40pm
ian:

take pitty on us
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Sam Segal:

See, if a comparison between Phish and Krautrock leaks to the Serious Music Media, this band will finally become hip to like, as happened with the Dead over the past 10 years.
  10:41pm
ian:

I actually think phish sound very recognizable. but if I'm trying to explain to someone the dead is a lazy reference
  10:42pm
Dean:

Who doesn't hear Jane or Kraan here? Early Grobschnitt? What hasn't already leaked?
🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
WR:

Guys, it's only rock and roll and I like it.

Post 45 rpm, 20 minutes to an LP side rock and toll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Sam Segal:

WR is on board! Yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Sam Segal:

The comparison may be obvious to us, Dean, but so many people's minds have been poisoned against Phish. They're just a punchline for so many supposedly sophisticated music people.
  10:47pm
Dean:

I'm slow. I finally get your gist. You're saying, "Buy Phish puts!"
Avatar 10:51pm
northguineahills:

I saw the Dead, three months before Jerry died, and it took me four years before I got into them and bought their albums....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
chresti:

Ground floor of Phish.
  10:56pm
ian:

the thing is they are funny. nobody quite knows what to do with humor in serious rock music.
  10:56pm
Dean:

Bud Scoppa in 1972, Rolling Stone, reviewing Bob Weir's Ace: "Reviews of Grateful Dead records are invariably written by those who've been touched by that mysterious and--to me--incomprehensible power-to-enchant that exists somewhere in the Dead's galaxy."

I read here not a dismissal, but a subconscious(?) fear of engaging the band, a reluctant suspicion that there's something there hard to square with the Stones, the Who, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Sam Segal:

These things take time, NGH! Liking the Dead also took me a long time. There was a long period where I wanted to like them more than I did, but then it all finally started to click.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
chresti:

Entry level Phish, taught at PU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Sam Segal:

Great point re: humor in Phish's music, Ian. One reason Ween doesn't totally get their due.
  10:59pm
ian:

funny in a nerdy way but also a drug humor way. maybe you just have to be in the target audience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
chresti:

rw!
  11:00pm
ian:

I started liking the dead thanks to wfmu
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
chresti:

They have their own luthier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Franco Twinkie:

Most intractable opinions about rock music are forged by young people who have a lot of passion but not a lot of perspective. People who follow only one type of music to the exclusion are rarely capable of making informed and measured judgement about diametrically opposes but equally valid forms of racket. I was watching the debate and now I have to go to the store. I wish I could hang out and argue about Phish.
  11:01pm
ian:

that dude that plays all dead bootlegs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Sam Segal:

Very well stated, Franco.
  11:02pm
ian:

I wonder if there's a big crossover with Rick and Morty fans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm

Jeff Conklin, Avant Ghetto, ian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Sam Segal:

Haha, I would bet there is, Ian.
Avatar 11:04pm
northguineahills:

@ian: listening to shortwave in Japan w/ Dr Demento as a little kid in the late 80s, has humor baked into my musicality. (huge TMBGs fan)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
chresti:

^that dude that played dead bootlegs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Sam Segal:

I mean these guys are just locked in right here...good god.
Avatar 11:07pm
northguineahills:

well, Franco was more erudite then I.

I dig...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm

We'll try to get into some spacier jams before bed, I swear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
doctorjazz:

Something Phishy in this one horse town, I tell you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Sam Segal:

Clifford Ball is one of Phish's more beloved live shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Sam Segal:

Doc! You smelled correct. Here, take my hacky sack.
  11:11pm
Dean:

The Dead prevailed not because Serious jerk-offs finally discovered them, but because they cultivated a fan base who could crowd-source avant la lettre. Didn't hurt that UC Santa Cruz became the home base for the archives.
  11:12pm
ian:

haha I was a Dr demento fan also. this is like a treasure trove of big data. glad fmu chat is private.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm

(I hear Dark Star listening to this, sorry...)
Avatar 11:12pm

siddhartha damnit, Ian is right w/ his Venn diagram of associations w/ Rick and Morty (actually like the show). guitly...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Sam Segal:

No doubt, Dean. I'm being kind of tongue-in-cheek. I don't actually care what Serious Music People think of the Dead or what they think of Phish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Sam Segal:

Don't apologize, Doc! I hear it too!
  11:14pm
ian:

I just found out my gf totally hates phish and the dead
Avatar 11:14pm
northguineahills:

Dean hit the nail on the head....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Sam Segal:

My girlfriend doesn't much care for them either, Ian.
Avatar 11:19pm
northguineahills:

It took Aoxomoxoa to turn my partner to appreciate the dead. (When I had an abode, music was on constantly).
Avatar 11:24pm
northguineahills:

I dig you dig Phish, it makes your dj set so much more enjoyable in context of what you piay. Skal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
doctorjazz:

I suppose having a strong Dead influence shouldn't negate them; I still love Sonny Stitt, though Charlie Parker is there in all his solos. Haven't really listened to Phish much (always loved the Dead)
Avatar 11:27pm
northguineahills:

My last anecdote, at the Phish show I went to, there was a trailer serving grilled cheese sandwiches.... Had a great time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm

We all come out of somewhere...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm

Thanks, NGH! I've been wanting to do a Phish show for years. Glad I finally got around to sharing my love for them with all my radio friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Sam Segal:

Grilled cheese...classic lot fare!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm

Hey, it beats the VP debate (though the debate had a great sequence, with a fly hiking on Pence's stiffly coiffed hair)

arigato gasaimau-te, It's cool to hear a curator of music I'm not overly familiar w/. Thanks for the education!.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm

They're much sillier than the Dead (from this tiny sequence, generalizing big time). Better sense of humor, perhaps...?

Definitely sillier than the Dead, Doc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm

@Chresti @11:04...I think Jeff Conklin is also a Phish fan. I think he's played Phish on his show a few times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
doctorjazz:

Jeff did pay Phish and similar stuff.
  11:45pm
Dean:

Just occurred to me that The Tubes were perhaps an influence, too.
  11:47pm
Dean:

But I think the Dead had a better sense of humor. I mean, "Goddamn, well I declare..."! How do you beat that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm

And we bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm

(Think I just received an advance copy of American Beauty-The Angels Share (Demos))
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
Franco Twinkie:

The Dead were funny, but there humor was rarely obvious in the music. But in interviews, they were always funny and mischievous in the way that smart rebels always are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
doctorjazz:

Just the name Phish head has gruesome connotations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm

Franco, back Finn the shop. Didn't the fly steal the show in the debate?
🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
WR:

Laters all. Clean your phish well before cooking, watch out for parasites.
  11:59pm

Exactly. Phish's is the humor of Saturday Night Live: obvious.
