	8:16pm peter: @LambdaCalculus, I use a Nakamichi! you can find pretty good deals locally sometimes; craigslist, etc.. I got a mid-line model for 100 dollars (and another $100 for repairs around the 3-year mark)

	8:27pm coelacanth∅: i brought home a techniques (dual) cassette deck last week. it was in my sister's house for an estate sale and a few people asked about it but i told them $30. and no one would pay that. idiots. but i'm glad because i wanted it -even though i don't need it. (i have 5? cassette decks now!) and i doubt i'll have to pay for it.

	8:37pm rw: chresti! It seems nice. Literally arrived yesterday and hooked up today. I missed the first part of BPL because I was messing around with it. Now I have to figure out where to get blank cassettes! Part of the decision to get it was to make tapes for my son's car while he's away at college.
	8:40pm coelacanth∅: i've had less than desirable results with 3 (out of 3) tascam devices; but these are all digital ("analogue-digital"?) one cost me 4-500 $ new c.2011, i used it maybe 40 times and now it's useless. cost as much to fix as a new one (now $300) the guy at tascam said that's about the expected life, regardless of how much it's been used. bullshit. on MY planet they'd give partial credit toward a new one.
	8:41pm Franco Twinkie: Spodiodi @8:27: Actually, no. The kids who work at this cafe seem pretty aware. Anyway, I'm the nutty old man who comes in and starts sputtering about surveillance capitalism when they insist I can't pay in cash and have to stick my Visa card in the devils asshole.

	8:45pm coelacanth∅: sorry! but ...(see coel@842) the rw900 it's the cd drive that failed; and dp-02s the buttons stick. so these are entirely different mechanisms than that cassette deck has.
	8:47pm rw: coel, I still have a tape deck from the early '80s that I loved but stopped using years ago because the repair bills became more expensive than buying a new one.

	8:48pm Gary: This model gets glowing reviews everywhere I looked, so I'm crossing my fingers that I can rip through my tape collection w/out incident
	8:48pm Dean: Cool cafe near us prefers cash. Tascam is the "pro" line of TEAC (or of what once was TEAC). My last two CD transports have been Tascam. Dirt cheap and just fine, while my DAC is more, uh, precious. My dream transport would require a second mortgage.

	8:59pm coelacanth∅: rw i know what you mean. my first (sort of) cassette deck was an akai with mic/line mixing and elaborate features (like manual calibration for every different tape being used, to get the best sound)- $500 in 1979. my mother was really pissed off that i bought a tape deck before a car after getting my first job. fortunately there was an akai repair facility not far. (actual akai employees). i took it for a rebuild 2-3 X but after a few decades there were too many things wrong. the thing was beautiful though.

	9:02pm Dean: I had a great Nakamichi for a short while, later a good NAD, which I retain, barely used, in its box.
	9:03pm coelacanth∅: Dean tascam is called that, but they also pioneered home recording devices. i'll never buy a teac again though. i haven't sworn off tascam.
	9:03pm rw: coel, Wow. Sounds amazing. I remember how hard it was to make good sounding tapes. Weirdly, I just hooked up this new deck and played a couple old tapes and I could hear the sound of my old machine. Took me back and a little aback.
	9:07pm Gary: RW, you can get rid of tape hiss (if you want to) using the noise reduction on the deck and/or in Audacity -- I've found it best to leave the noise reduction off and just clean it up in Audacity
	9:08pm Gary: ... assuming you're going to rip your cassettes, that is
	9:08pm Dean: Some of us, a la Tony Coulter, like to swig tape hiss straight.
	9:08pm Dean: I mean, if you're not into high fidelity, don't pretend you're into high fidelity.
	9:10pm coelacanth∅: nice, rw! i should add that these devices that ultimately let me down are wonderful machines, in design and function. there're just issues with wear/time. i love love love the tascam dp-02. if it weren't for that machine i possibly wouldn't have ever gotten stuck on the east coast, making noise!

	9:13pm coelacanth∅: in the 80s i used dolby (b or c) sometimes and sometimes not. the sound of the tapes i didn't use dolby on held up much better. most of 'em still sound great.
	9:16pm rw: Gary, that may be too finicky for me at this point in my life. But thanks! If I get to that point I'll give that a try. Life seems to shift this way and that as it goes along.
	9:18pm rw: Or... maybe finicky isn't the word. Mostly I wanted the player to play existing tapes and make some mixtapes. Not so interested in ripping at this point.

	9:21pm mmmz: i record early johnny cash and ornette coleman CDs onto tape enjoying hiss, warp and distortion makes the overall music sounds better
	9:22pm Gary: I dunno how amazing it is, but there're maybe juuust enough items to justify gettin that deck
	9:23pm Dean: rw: You're in Fullerton, right? I acquired in 1994 (!) the amplifiers I use to this day from a superb stereo gear shop on Imperial in Brea. I was disappointed when he left to head to Brooklyn. Good gear.
	9:23pm mmmz: most surprising result was Mozart Requiem on tape playing it back on walkman mono speaker made my spine shiver.
	9:25pm Gary: My earliest cassette memory is one of those mono players with the sort of metal meshy flat area (covering the speaker) and finding, I can't remember where, The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour and listening to that late at night, smelling the electronics smell of the cassette player ... ahhhhhh
	9:25pm rw: Dean, yes, Fullerton. Weird how recent and far away 1994 is. I may have bought something from Best Buy on Imperial at Harbor, but I'm pretty sure we're talking about two different things!
	9:29pm rw: Gary, I remember carrying one of those under the seat of the car because all I had was an AM radio. I'd play tapes I made of Van der Graff Generator records. Ah... memories. Now that I think of it. I LOVED that smell too!
	9:29pm mmmz: on the other hand I can play back 192Khz high Res properly. Haven't used it for a while.
	9:31pm Dean: Indeed. This was nearby, in a tiny strip mall not far from that Best Buy. South side, near the Randolph intersection, in the mall where now resides a Subway.

(i have 5? cassette decks now!) and i doubt i'll have to pay for it.

Now I have to figure out where to get blank cassettes! Part of the decision to get it was to make tapes for my son's car while he's away at college.
	8:40pm coelacanth∅: i've had less than desirable results with 3 (out of 3) tascam devices; but these are all digital ("analogue-digital"?) one cost me 4-500 $ new c.2011, i used it maybe 40 times and now it's useless. cost as much to fix as a new one (now $300) the guy at tascam said that's about the expected life, regardless of how much it's been used. bullshit. on MY planet they'd give partial credit toward a new one.

	8:48pm Dean: Cool cafe near us prefers cash. Tascam is the "pro" line of TEAC (or of what once was TEAC). My last two CD transports have been Tascam. Dirt cheap and just fine, while my DAC is more, uh, precious. My dream transport would require a second mortgage.

	8:59pm coelacanth∅: rw i know what you mean. my first (sort of) cassette deck was an akai with mic/line mixing and elaborate features (like manual calibration for every different tape being used, to get the best sound)- $500 in 1979. my mother was really pissed off that i bought a tape deck before a car after getting my first job. fortunately there was an akai repair facility not far. (actual akai employees). i took it for a rebuild 2-3 X but after a few decades there were too many things wrong. the thing was beautiful though.

	9:02pm Dean: I had a great Nakamichi for a short while, later a good NAD, which I retain, barely used, in its box.
	9:03pm coelacanth∅: Dean tascam is called that, but they also pioneered home recording devices. i'll never buy a teac again though. i haven't sworn off tascam.
	9:03pm rw: coel, Wow. Sounds amazing. I remember how hard it was to make good sounding tapes. Weirdly, I just hooked up this new deck and played a couple old tapes and I could hear the sound of my old machine. Took me back and a little aback.
	9:07pm Gary: RW, you can get rid of tape hiss (if you want to) using the noise reduction on the deck and/or in Audacity -- I've found it best to leave the noise reduction off and just clean it up in Audacity

	9:25pm Gary: My earliest cassette memory is one of those mono players with the sort of metal meshy flat area (covering the speaker) and finding, I can't remember where, The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour and listening to that late at night, smelling the electronics smell of the cassette player ... ahhhhhh
