TGK! Is that block of Indian restaurants still in the east village - 6th street and 1st Ave?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Gary:

I think so, FT. This track, Hawa Hawaii, is one I have probably mentioned several times, and maybe pointed folks to before, but haven't apparently ever played before. The scene itself is outrageous: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Gary:

In this first part, she's spouting pure zaum
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
Franco Twinkie:

Gary, we use to imagine they all shared one kitchen connected by a long hallway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Ike:

I walked by there a year or two ago -- some of those Indian restaurants are gone, some are still there. It's really diversified and there are a lot more authentic-looking Chinese restaurants in that general area now, plus loads of other stuff to appeal to NYU students.
🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
WR:

One of my first great music finds in NYC in the 90s was an LP of Geeta Dutt, found in a long gone South Asian clothing and gift shop on Lexington in the upper 20s in Manhattan. Moved to Jackson Heights in 98 and soon I was scooping up DVDS for cheap. Got every Guru Dutt and Satyajit Ray movie and and dozens from other directors. Plus dozens of anthologies featuring playback singers or composers. Have yet to review and digest it all.

I might've mentioned before, but my intro to Bollywood was via an Indian grocery, with tapes for $2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Gary:

This film is worth seeing for Shammi Kapoor -- which is more or less true of every film with Shammi Kapoor
🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
WR:

As I began to learn about the genre and found that popular movies would usually be in 2 to 4 languages, with different singers and voice over actors I gave up on keeping track of it all. Happy to enjoy the gems that I know and whatever I happen to get hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
Gary:

My intro was seeing the film Khuda Gawa at the University of Minnesota and trying to track down the soundtrack for the next 10 years
🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:49pm

Asha Bhosle and her sister Lata Mangeshkar between them have probably recorded as many songs as released by whole countries.

Oh right, I think that's near where that one Indian or Pakistani restaurant used to be open 24 hours, and I went there once at 4 a.m. after a party and it was great. A very unusual/memorable moment for me.
🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
WR:

Ok, the Barsaat Ki Raat song Karvaan Ki Talash Hai" (Yeh Ishq Ishq Hai) according to Wikipedia features the singers Asha Bhosle, Sudha Malhotra, Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, S. D. Batish, so not whole new crew but does look like a movie worth seeing.

This jump to 1994 (even with the rap) was not jarring from the earlier qawwali song. At least not with the expert bodega pop segue.

Gary, I think I know the spot you mean on Coney Island Ave & Ave H (although I had been thinking it was on Utica..?).. The one experience I had there was regrettably brief, as the owner was playing porn on his personal TV (you could hear the sound, and it was rather loud, but not see) which understandably lessened the time my companion was willing to hang around.. :P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm
Gary:

Haha, oh man, that's ... wow, Peter. There were several places I used to stop by on Coney Island Ave, all around H, generally ... used to bike or bus down there from where I lived at the top of Ocean Parkway
