The show's just started swimmingly, doctorjazz! No worries, Julie. It was all good, leading out of one of my fave Laura Nyro tunes. Hi also to you, DavidJ and chresti!

Julie, this show will be mostly jazz in deference to Dave and his audience (plus, I do love jazz).

Good to hear, maybe I can get there. (Last saw them at the old City Winery with guests Nels Cline and John Medeski, took my older daughter. They played a very "out" set (in deference to Nels, I'd bet). I loved it, Mr daughter, not so much...

Just stumbled across this from one of my favorite pianists, Alan Broadbent: https://www.jazzviews.net/alan-broadbent---musicians-playlist.html Peter's dad gets a shout-out. Worth noting, too, that OK produced Alan's albums with Lee Konitz at Jazz Bakery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm

Thanks for this, Dean! I almost played a Broadbent/Konitz piece today. I'll save it for Monday's show.

Vocalist (Canned Heat) Robert Hite is not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm
Irene Trudel:

Dean, actually not. We were just checking and Hite (the visual artist) passed in May from Pancreatic Cancer. www.legacy.com...
  3:13pm
Dean:

Oh, my, that is sad. And so his site, featuring a number of examples of his remarkable work, lingers on, even noting an exhibition slated to extend through the end of the year. Not that galleries are being frequented these days...

Driving home , listening, had to pull over to comment. Great album, this Baker (Dean hipped3 me to it, thanks). What chops! (He had another album of his takes on Monk, also fine). Ok, back to the road (home soon).

Duck Baker's full given name is Richard Royal Baker, IV.
  3:32pm

So glad you like it, doctorjazz! And thanks, I&P, for reminding me about the new Baker album. Meant to acquire it earlier in the week.

Second track on the new Baker: Dr. Jazz!

I have at least four copies of Waltz for Debby, vinyl and CD.

Thanks Dean! About two years ago I had Duck in for an interview and live performance on WFMU. Lovely guy and so knowledgeable about all kinds of music. We could've talked for days! Archived here: wfmu.org...

Just tuned in, sounds GDish
  3:45pm
Dean:

Might also sound Beefheart-ish, if I remember correctly from a Mallard track played earlier this week on the station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
doctorjazz:

I remember reading reviews by Baker (think it was for Jazz Times), which were terrifically written, and covered the entire scope of jazz/improvised music. Don't think he still writes for them, though, but I really enjoyed them.
Will have to listen to that archive.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm

And that archived Baker interview was what I could fit into an hour-long slot, which is what I was hosting that summer. I easily had another half hour or so I could've kept in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Irene Trudel:

Dean, you are correct-- Mallard essentially was The Magic Band. Never got enough credit as players back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
doctorjazz:

And thanks for that link, @Dean.
  3:52pm
Dean:

Was wondering if Baker had ever played with that other DB guitarist Bailey. Yes, he has, and I'd forgotten that I have the record, Ducks Palace. Will spin later today! Also features Zorn, Rudd, and Baptista.

Ibrahim is so amazing! I've seen him a few times and really love how he plays a seamless set start to finish without applause breaks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm

Carlos Ward, I believe, fabulous!

Dean:

Per the liner notes in Ducks Palace, John Zorn inspired and produced the Baker Nichols album.

Ages ago, I was studying jazz guitar with a fellow in the Village, who had studied with Jim Hall, and we went to see Hall at the Village Vanguard. Between sets, Hall sat down with us for a few minutes, and told us he had just played about Metheny, and RAVED about his playing. I was lukewarm up until that point, but I had to listen and appreciate him more after that (and I did).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm
doctorjazz:

(My Metheny appreciation went better than my jazz guitar, alas.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Irene Trudel:

Well, doctorjazz, I'm in that same category as a guitarist. Let's just say it's better if I listen than try to play.
