STF was my gateway to FMU when I first heard it on a visit to NYC in 1996. It was aggravating not being able to listen to it back in England. I was so excited when the download podcast era started. Still got plenty of episodes from the Noughties on my old and thankfully still functional iPod.

For me the icebreaker was Tony Coulter when I discovered it; the time-zone thing worked out perfectly in AZ. I remember being fascinated by his back-announcing happening over a bed of (i think) the sound of light traffic. Ambient car noises.

In college (90s) when I was home for the holidays, I would record FMU on as many cassettes as I could. then in my college town a venue had a door man from nyc who loved FMU and i wouldn't have to pay a cover if i gave him cassettes of FMU. haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Handy Haversack:

We listened in college 1993-1997. FMU, FDU, BAI. Then I left town for a while. It was in our regular radio rotation then for years after like 2005 but only the past three years did I process what the internet had meant for it. They never did breed Haversacks for their smarts.

Handy - Terroir is a big thing for whisk(e)y. I recently came accross a single malt from a distillery in Goa, India. A bottle was retailing for £300+. I wonder what the author would think of that 'terroir'. I would love to hear more about it.

@Bas - interesting. the bottle I saw was only a 5 yo and I thought, not enough time. But would love to try.
@chris - it's a bit more than that. For instance I've got my eyes on a bottle of Old Pulteney. The distillery is right on the coast and, not surprisingly, the sea air imparts a feint salty flavour to the spirit.

A few years back my missus bought me a ‘whisky weekend’ at the London Whisky School for my birthday. Although getting the first dram down at 10am was a challenge, it was a truly great weekend. As part of it, we had to blend and devise a marketing campaign for our own whisky. We made The GlenHackney’ and it went down very well with the class. Sadly, being a small batch run it has long since sold out. I still have an empty bottle or two though...

@Bas - I visited the Laphroaig distillery a few years back and the 'gimmick' they had was if you bought a bottle at the end of the tour you got a certificate granting you (apparantly legal) ownerhip of one square foot of peat bog on the island, complete with map to indicate where it was situated. The deal was that the distillery rented it back from you and would pay one dram a year for this. Only thing was that you had to turn up in person to collect your annual 'rent'.
