No argument here. I religiously listened to the Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, etc. in the 80s

C.S.:

There was a great cheesy 80s show that Meghan had done a while back and one listener had a nice comment on how clean-sounding the music was. You could hear every instrument without much in the way of noise. In the 90s when grunge was popular, there was a backlash against the 80s with people saying it was too corporate.

oh, I read somewhere that people can have a tendency of getting musically stuck at late teenagehood/early adulthood, maybe that's one of the reasons...

@Mark R yeah, synths can really be polarizing
  12:31pm
Mark R:

David Bowie said in the 70s, people like Eno and himself didn't really read the manuals, they just started fooling around with them, and all these delicously weird sounds came out. By the 80s, I think a lot of keyboard players had figures out how to play synths "correctly." A lot of times, it was just adding a texture, a part
that maybe in the old days might have been played by strings.

Apples and Oranges was also nice, I told this already on big planet noise, but I remember taping the Pink Floyd early stuff comp Masters Of Rock in a listening room (or was it even some staff-only room) around nov.'94 assisted by a library worker who was very worried whilehelping me break the copyright laws (we did not, copying for one's own use is OK here): "you know, I'm not supposed to do this..." Those early singles were very hard to get then, besides the early singles disc of the shine on box set, masters of rock was the cheapest option AND it had that stereo version of apples and oranges, which was very rare then.

@2:19 C.S.: exactly!
@2:20 Julie: yes, especially easily available in europe but cheap in usa back in the day as well I presume? the price I eventually found the vinyl for sround '97 was not exactly astronomical if not so cheap either.

Pinkfloyd Cha Cha during the conversation a few nights ago i looked that album up, with hopes of having a valuable collector item in my possession and was disappointed.
<$10. (usd) - just over $31. (usd) shipped here to the states.
...of course, that is quite affordable for some people.

a reason that masters of rock lp is a somehow useless now is the mono singles were rechanneled into stereo (this was a bit annoying to listen with headphones) minus apples and oranges which was true stereo. unless you have the original 45s (I wish I had!), the piper box does the job.

man I love that piper box

Cha Cha, i probably have listened to that album with headphones, but 30-40 years ago. i don't remember any weird sound issues, but my tastes may not have been very refined at that age.
the album doesn't say anything about stereo or mono, and the wikipedia page (which is otherwise lacking) contradicts some of what you say, but mostly doesn't specify.
did you determine that by listening?

@2:45 coelacanth∅: my memory is from 1994, I did not even know what fake stereo was, but I remember it sounded weird. the wikipedia article does not really contradict what I said, there was no mention of arnold layne, candy or see emily play rechanneled, but I seem to remember they were. A pity my stereo amp's headphones socket is broken so I can't check it.

-oh, when i said it contradicts i mean paintbox, but also that it only mentions one song being reprocessed. some might assume that if others were they too would be mentioned...but anyone can write a wikipedia article -so, no!
