@DOUG >>> RE goofus >>
The couesnophone, also known as the goofus or queenophone, is a free-reed musical instrument resembling a saxophone. Its reeds vibrate when the desired keys are activated and the player blows through a tube. ... However, the couesnophone is a polyphonic instrument, while the saxophone is monophonic.

I had always (pre internet) thought Buratti was pseudonym used by Mingus for this date for whatever reason. (Saw the record on lists, haven't heard it before).Now can easily see that Buratti was an active bassist.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:20am
StringOFperils:

Once upon a time, long ago, in a sort of long-gone piano bar/boite hereabouts, Jaki Byard was in for a few days in a row. The place a had a kind of railing thing where you could hang out next to the piano (if you got there early), which I did. Jaki, free to roam while not part of an ensemble, played a lot of OUT stuff as I stared, slack-jawed, at his hands working away. Pretty avant really, but at one point he strayed into Beethoven's fifth, and with a wry look on his face, briefly glance sideways at me and said laconically, "Hip shit."
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:22am
doctorjazz:

A bit of both, Fred. Be glad to get back to the office (Monday), but the month off, with all its craziness and scariness, was kinda nice. Both daughters are home, went out biking a lot (as nasty weather permitted), slept in most days, caught up with some of my "not yet played" music, was nice.

This date does "crackle with energy", as Master Drummer put it. Maybe BECAUSE they could venture more ;out" than usual...

Zoom cocktails can be good, especially with people you seldom see. Of course, longer silences can seem very oppressive, like on a phone.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am
Doug Schulkind:

@sinner
I first heard Mary Gauthier on Global Jukebox, an early internet-only radio show out of the UK hosted by Paul Sherratt. He turned me on to a ton of brilliant American musicians, including Laura Veirs, who is coming up in a couple of tracks.

Another nasty day here in Jersey. Yuck!
Today's supposed to be Bandcamp's day of selling music without taking a cut (all proceeds to go to artists). Not sure if the site crashed, but have tried following a few links from my email there, and I don't get through. The app did go through, but really slowly.

@TDK60 - There’s a whole huge story involving the connections between New Orleans and LA in the 60s and a lot of it hinges on Sonny and Cher. I did a whole thing on my soul show years ago, but I’ll have to devote an episode of Testify to it (though I covered a lot of it on my Dr John memorial)
