	11:32am Doug Schulkind: A dear friend has his mother in a nursing home in New Jersey. Her roommate tested positive, but she tested negative. Nevertheless, they didn't move her out of the room. Now she is positive. Frail and demented and consigned to die. Horrible horrible horrible.
	🥁 11:33am doctorjazz: My sister's father in law (also 90+) was hospitalized a few days ago with heart failure and bilateral pneumonia, may or may not be virus related (but Maimonedes Hospital is a COVID battle ground, tents set up all around the outside of the hospital). He's stable so far. Crap crap crap!
	🥁 11:36am doctorjazz: @UM-my daughter tells me there is a study of dogs and music, with various ways of measuring their response, which found they like reggae best. We'll be testing that out with Ozzie and Maxie at some point.
	11:36am Listener Gregory: A college classmate of mine came down with the virus and ended up in the ICU (in England). She made it through and got home, but she tells me things like, "It is too tiring to talk aloud" for her to do any work. That struck me.
	11:37am Dean: Sad, sad news, doctorjazz. My mom, who will turn 93 on Tuesday, fractured her femur last week and spent several nights in the hospital. Now that she has returned to her residence, she has to quarantine for two weeks. She has no symptoms, and her test results should arrive before the two weeks are up. She lives three blocks from our house, but of course we can't visit her.

	11:40am Doug Schulkind: Exactly two years ago I was completing a year's field placement in a country administered nursing home here. It's the scene of over 100 positive residents and staff. Only eight deaths at the moment. The people I worked with there are beyond heroic.

	11:44am still b/p: The people with their signs and slogans at statehouses who want to "reopen." Clearly they're willing to see troubling health impacts and deaths, but I haven't heard them explain their "back to business" in terms of its significant inhumane impact on medical personnel with continued stresses and crazy hardships -- or impacts on facilities/supplies.
	11:44am Dean: Yow, Doug! My mom's residence, a CCRC, has no positive residents so far. When the hospital was preparing to discharge my mom, they wanted to send her to one of four facilities with nursing care, one of which I had just learned was preparing to admit COVID-19 patients. I really wanted her back home, and things have worked out well in that regard. An RN visits her twice a week, and she will have PT and OT for a few weeks. Thanks, all. I believe I am one of the so-called sandwich generation -- a 93YO mom, kids 9 and 14. Nobody told me, though, that the sandwich is a panini.
	🥁 11:45am doctorjazz: A fractured femur pretty much means the bone density is low (you or I would have a hard time fracturing our femur, severe trauma needed). My mom did it twice with minor falls when she was around 90.

	11:53am still b/p: Interesting osteo note from a few years that might be shared with young people: one middle-aged sister learns she's in danger of osteoporosis and must give it some attention. She advises other sisters to check. A couple of them find same thing, but with the family's set of twins, one has the advanced risk, one doesn't. The theory they heard was high school athletics one twin had participated in had a long-term benefit in firming up the ol' bones.

	11:54am Jeff Moore: @doctorjazz I Am Not A Doctor (of jazz or otherwise), so nobody actually believe what I'm saying here without confirmation, but... I believe that the upside of maintaining proper Vitamin D levels is a no-brainer. It's apparently involved in a number of important things in one's body (calcium absorption and immune function), and is important enough that my regular MD included testing for proper levels in a routine blood workup a year or so back. In times when people might not get outside in the sunshine, supplementation is even more in order. But the goal is steady maintenance of normal-ish levels; as with damn near anything, too much can screw you up.

	11:32am Doug Schulkind: A dear friend has his mother in a nursing home in New Jersey. Her roommate tested positive, but she tested negative. Nevertheless, they didn't move her out of the room. Now she is positive. Frail and demented and consigned to die. Horrible horrible horrible.
	🥁 11:33am doctorjazz: My sister's father in law (also 90+) was hospitalized a few days ago with heart failure and bilateral pneumonia, may or may not be virus related (but Maimonedes Hospital is a COVID battle ground, tents set up all around the outside of the hospital). He's stable so far. Crap crap crap!
	🥁 11:36am doctorjazz: @UM-my daughter tells me there is a study of dogs and music, with various ways of measuring their response, which found they like reggae best. We'll be testing that out with Ozzie and Maxie at some point.
	11:36am Listener Gregory: A college classmate of mine came down with the virus and ended up in the ICU (in England). She made it through and got home, but she tells me things like, "It is too tiring to talk aloud" for her to do any work. That struck me.
	11:37am Dean: Sad, sad news, doctorjazz. My mom, who will turn 93 on Tuesday, fractured her femur last week and spent several nights in the hospital. Now that she has returned to her residence, she has to quarantine for two weeks. She has no symptoms, and her test results should arrive before the two weeks are up. She lives three blocks from our house, but of course we can't visit her.

	11:40am Doug Schulkind: Exactly two years ago I was completing a year's field placement in a country administered nursing home here. It's the scene of over 100 positive residents and staff. Only eight deaths at the moment. The people I worked with there are beyond heroic.

Clearly they're willing to see troubling health impacts and deaths, but I haven't heard them explain their "back to business" in terms of its significant inhumane impact on medical personnel with continued stresses and crazy hardships -- or impacts on facilities/supplies.
	11:44am Dean: Yow, Doug! My mom's residence, a CCRC, has no positive residents so far. When the hospital was preparing to discharge my mom, they wanted to send her to one of four facilities with nursing care, one of which I had just learned was preparing to admit COVID-19 patients. I really wanted her back home, and things have worked out well in that regard. An RN visits her twice a week, and she will have PT and OT for a few weeks. Thanks, all. I believe I am one of the so-called sandwich generation -- a 93YO mom, kids 9 and 14. Nobody told me, though, that the sandwich is a panini.
	🥁 11:45am doctorjazz: A fractured femur pretty much means the bone density is low (you or I would have a hard time fracturing our femur, severe trauma needed). My mom did it twice with minor falls when she was around 90.

	11:53am still b/p: Interesting osteo note from a few years that might be shared with young people: one middle-aged sister learns she's in danger of osteoporosis and must give it some attention. She advises other sisters to check. A couple of them find same thing, but with the family's set of twins, one has the advanced risk, one doesn't. The theory they heard was high school athletics one twin had participated in had a long-term benefit in firming up the ol' bones.

	11:54am Jeff Moore: @doctorjazz I Am Not A Doctor (of jazz or otherwise), so nobody actually believe what I'm saying here without confirmation, but... I believe that the upside of maintaining proper Vitamin D levels is a no-brainer. It's apparently involved in a number of important things in one's body (calcium absorption and immune function), and is important enough that my regular MD included testing for proper levels in a routine blood workup a year or so back. In times when people might not get outside in the sunshine, supplementation is even more in order. But the goal is steady maintenance of normal-ish levels; as with damn near anything, too much can screw you up.
