Hi, Phillippe! I ... still understand. We are weak people -- but in all the right ways!

I upped my S4L by just $6 this morning. But it was enough to let Clay shout about it!

($6 per YEAR, to be clear. Not month. The Sack is getting mighty empty.)

Phillippe Bastille:

@Handy that was a radio moment, that's for sure. Not sure if it made my tinnitus better or worse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
PGB:

Radio moments, yeah! What was your favorite WFMU radio moment?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
PGB:

I'll go first: a marathon broadcast in the late 1990s when a building on the Upsala campus was burning to the ground. Chris T went to the fire and went live on the air interviewing the fire chief. Chris asked him all sorts of questions, but not a single one about the fire they were both standing in front of. ("Is it true that firefighters all wear suspenders? What's up with that?")
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
listener james from westwood:

Ken Freedman earworm here!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
listener james from westwood:

PGB: After 102.7 died as a rock station, someone (Scott?) did an off-the-cuff show that night or very soon after, combining radio-themed/music-industry-oriented songs with horrified and angry calls from WNEW listeners stunned at the format change.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
Handy Haversack:

Indulging recency bias, but: Bryce and Hearty White talking to each other this Marathon wrung some actual tears out of me. And Sheila's addiction show, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
PGB:

Recency bias is totally acceptable!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
listener james from westwood:

One that's stuck in my head for a long time (not a fave per se, just memorable) was David Suisman broadcasting the night we invaded Iraq in March 2003 and, for his first mic break, just kept repeating a disgusted, agonized, "Goddammit."
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Another recent one that stood out for me was a couple weeks ago when mild-mannered Bryce turned into a roaring evil monster for the last minute and a half of his show.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
Handy Haversack:

Question for youse more JC-savvy -- ferry landing at Paulus Hook is the closest? We are coming from BKNY *three times* in the next three days!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Ken and Matt taking Pseu's chair from the studio and throwing it off the roof when she wouldn't stop bitching about it was pretty awesome too.
Avatar 🦇 12:41pm
Julie:

Yes Handy that is the closest stop. Easy walk to FMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm
PGB:

These moments are great! Not gonna find any of that at a station that's not WFMU.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
Handy Haversack:

Thanks, @Julie! Figure we will come west by ferry and retreat east by PATH.
Avatar 🦇 12:43pm
Julie:

Clay Pigeon and I doing radio for something like 17 hours during Hurricane Irene that was interesting. Especially as we started getting cranky.
Avatar 🦇 12:45pm
Julie:

Jonesey's 100 hour broadcast!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
listener james from westwood:

Oh holy crap, yes.
Avatar 🦇 12:46pm
Julie:

I have a vague memory of Ken & Jonesey kissing on the roof but I'm not entirely certain that's real.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
listener james from westwood:

The lead singer of Monotonix being carried through a record fair crowd, while singing, and standing on a drum, was another you-had-to-be-there moment. IIRC said singer may also have been spitting on people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
PGB:

That 100-hour broadcast was a towering achievement. In addition to Glen physical endurance, the Guinness Book of Records has dozens and dozens of rules that must be followed.

You never know how badly you need to hear "Charlotte Sometimes" until you hear "Charlotte Sometimes" and suddenly it turns out that something was WRONG THE WHOLE TIME since the last time you heard "Charlotte Sometimes," but now it's not anymore.
Avatar 🦇 12:54pm
Julie:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I remember one of Faye's Saturday evening shows where there was some kind of egregious technical error and Mary Wing commented about having to come over and fix it while in pajamas.

  1:05pm
John from Florham park:

Mine was the night John Lennon died and vinnie scelsa was crying on the air that was a powerful moment to me, and hearing carol crow trying to keep it together after spamoni died that was a sad show

Handy Haversack:

Wisconsin is asking gatherings of more than 250 to be canceled, so I have a feeling my friends' and my annual trip to play D&D and drink heavily and see other dear friends in two weeks is going to be called off. That's fine. Only been planning for it the last fifty weeks.
  2:09pm
Mr Nobody:

Yikes that wouldn't be good. I do worry about the passing it to others. With how long I have been hearing some people show little to no symptoms it is a concern.

@Handy the good news is that many dragons will live and reproduce for next year. Like shootin' fish in a barrel! (never played D&D so I dk if you slay dragons or not. Sounds like a worthwhile endeavor, tho)

What do they call "elderly"?

@GST howdy
@PB will do
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:14pm
listener james from westwood:

@Handy: Sorry to hear it's being threatened; that sounds like a right fun gathering. Gen Con in Indiana isn't until August, but I know the planning for that starts well before. 5 months can fly by. Canceling that would be horrible.
I'm just waiting for the planners of a conference I have booked in late April to cancel that one. 600+ copy editors in Salt Lake City seems like a ripe occasion for transmission but so far they're just watching and waiting.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:14pm

@ParUbi I saw "...the elderly (60+)...". I'm 62 {sighs dejectedly}

@Julie: Good call!

@James: what conference? I know some academic ones are being canceled. The next one I have is Digital Book World in Nashville in September -- certainly hope we're not still canceling things then!

@Phillippe, my games don't have dragons, exactly ... and my players would more more likely to team up with them maximize treasure extraction from the local populace ... but it's the right idea!

I would like a pledging system whereby i make a big lump sum pledge at the beginning and can direct portions of it to different shows as i listen to them. I can't stand the credit card companies taking a cut every time i pledge. Bah!
