i once did a late night shift at my station but had to work the next day and the host after me routinely spaced coming in on time, often just flaking out altogether. I finally told the Programming director, who was also at the time acting station manager, that I would just put a CD of Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music on repeat and leave, locking the door behind me. From then on, there was a more robust list of reliable emergency sub DJs posted in the air room.

At the local student-staffed station at WVKR, when there was a gap in the DJ coverage, they would start two CDs on two different players on repeat. One CD was a mix of 80s pop selections and the other was 59+ minutes of silence followed by a station legal ID.

picking up the live radio misadventure thread again: there's a legendary story about an older Jazz DJ at my station who - one Saturday, when there's no one at the station but the DJ on the air - had managed to wrap himself up to his chair with both his headphone cord AND his frantically yapping dogs leash. He actually called for help on the air. It was sadly before digital archiving, but several older DJs have sworn that it actually happened and went out over the air.

Yeah, I remember buying that Cretones album and it was like half of Mad Love. I just looked him up on Wikipedia. Looks like he is still active. And that resume is... fantastic! Wrote for Frampton, Pointer Sisters, Jackson Browne, Cher, Linda, Judy Collins and many others en.wikipedia.org...
