Here a little early Larry. I really hope Tina Delgado is not on the playlist.

Hey Matt! Why's that?

So is it just songs about radio DJs or club DJs? Or both?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I always found it odd that the flip of this has the sound effects on it. I guess it would allow a dj to play with them on a second turntable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm

Almost all Radio DJs

Real Don Steele had a TV show in LA (elsewhere, too, maybe?) on which I remember seeing a band, Angel's Damnation. Or am I misremembering?
  10:23pm
Dean:

Respecting the matter of memory of these virtual media, AM and FM included, see Cliff Lynch's marvelous Stewardship in the 'Age of Algorithms'. To preserve the record, we need a concerted effort.

Some of these guys hosted dance party shows, main among them Jerry Blavat in Philadelphia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm

Thanks Dean! I bookmarked that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
coelacanth∅:

am radio memory: when spill the wine was a big hit i was a wee lad and toward the end Eric Burden of course says
spillthewine spillthewine spillthewine etc.
and little me heard it as diddiwack diddiwack etc.
- don't know where i got that from but once at the end of that song the dj on wabc started going "diddiwack diddiwack diddiwack..."!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
coelacanth∅:

...i wonder if anyone else who heard that remembers it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Funky16Corners:

Any memory of who the DJ was?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm

no. if i could each wabc dj voice side by side i might be able to
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Jeff Ash:

Knew we'd be hearing from King Coleman!
  10:29pm
Dean:

Ha, coel! I was a young 'un, too, at the time. I adored the song and only recently acquired a copy of it. I heard, "spiddiwa, spiddiwa, spiddiwa..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
coelacanth∅:

..."could HEAR..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Funky16Corners:

I ask because WABC was my first Top 40 station, too. Dan Ingram, Cousin Brucie, Harry Harrison, Chuck Leonard etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - Couldn't do it without him!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm

Larry if i HAD to guess i'd say Cousin Brucie or Harry Harrison.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
coelacanth∅:

i remember being pissed that Harry Harrison and Dan Ingram (more than the others) would stick their one-phrase (their respective names) jingles in the middle of songs playing
...i can still mimick those

Today is, in a weird coincidence, the 10th anniversary of Soupy's death
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
doctorjazz:

Soupy Sales, yet to watch his show, fun song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
doctorjazz:

Used to watch, that is...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - Yes to both of them, especially "DAAAAAAN INGRAM" followed by the chime!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
doctorjazz:

Used to drive me nuts too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm

we liked the Soupy Sales show - sometimes (like when he did the soupy shuffle)
my mother objected to him and discouraged us, but didn't forbid watching it.

Jewish Life TV shows episodes of the Soup Sales Show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
coelacanth∅:

Larry yes!! right in the middle of "hitchin' a ride"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
JtotheK:

Maggie Thrett. yay! Also, I enjoyed SheilaB's story about this 45 - she spun it out ... and she was complimented by a member of the audience who was singing along ... only to find out it was a member of De La Soul (who had sampled the 45 on the 3 Feet High and Rising album).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I was completely unaware that channel existed Larry.
  10:40pm
Dean:

White Fang gave me nightmares.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Funky16Corners:

@JtotheK - That's why the 45 is so expensive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
coelacanth∅:

one time one of them went crazy with it. did it twice. my older sister and i were like what the heck?
then again! -then at least 2 more times!
we were cracking up by then!
  10:44pm
Dean:

Tonight's theme reminds me of a song written by a talented friend of mine, John Feodorov, whose song "My Favorite Song" was titled precisely to require DJs who spun it to announce that each had just played "my favorite song." Thus, while it wasn't strictly about DJs, it was intended to engage them semantically.
Avatar 10:45pm
Erica:

Good goes around and around. Wrong song I know. Haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Funky16Corners:

@Dean - That sounds cool. I'll bet there are a lot of similar songs on the same tip.
  10:48pm
Dean:

Of course, and then there's the wild assumption that any DJ would play the tune in the first place. But it was, in fact, very good.
Avatar 10:48pm
Erica:

That DOES sound like a cool idea Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Funky16Corners:

This is - believe it or not - the original version of this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
coelacanth∅:

really? before Peggy Lee?
Avatar 10:51pm
Erica:

Then why didn't his version become the hit Larry?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Funky16Corners:

This and Leslie Uggams both predate Peggy Lee
  10:51pm
Dean:

"Original" is fairly ambiguous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Because Peggy Lee's version is subime perfection and this is goofy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Funky16Corners:

@Dean - Not at all. The first recording.
Avatar 10:52pm
Erica:

Ha! When I hear the name Leslie Uggams, I think of that Simpsons episode where Marge and Homer met at camp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Larry your assertion is partially true. It’s the first recorded version but it was performed on TV by Georgia Brown the year before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
coelacanth∅:

haha exactly!
PJ Harvey's is also sublime.
Avatar 10:52pm
still b/p:

This one didn't have a chance at charting, apparently:
"this was an unauthorized recording that, while played on Daniels' own radio show, went unissued at the songwriters' request."
Avatar 10:53pm
Erica:

Goofy isn't the word Larry, psychotic is more like it. Haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
coelacanth∅:

i can't fault Leiber and Stoller for that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
doctorjazz:

I didn't know about that channel either, sorta curious to check our the Soupy Sales shows, but I suspect they are the kind of thing best left to distant memory.
Avatar 10:54pm
Erica:

The laughing at the end reminds me of "They're coming to take me away".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Funky16Corners:

@SBP - It was released in white label promo (the one I have)
🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
WR:

Two minor points, first "released" recording. Also other stations were very unlikely to play something featuring talent from a competitor unless it became a hit. And hi all, listening while doing household chores.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey WR!
Avatar 10:56pm
Erica:

Ooh yes, Jerry Blavat. Surprised he sang bubblegum pop. Was hoping for something like rock n roll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
coelacanth∅:

hello again WR!
Avatar 10:58pm
Erica:

Meanwhile in the UK...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm

@Erica - I played Blavat's soul raver on last week's show
🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
WR:

And having grown up in Texas/ Louisiana I am wondering what other gems from the south you may have besides John R and E Rodney that you've played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Jeff Ash:

I just thought of an obscure Gerry Rafferty cut that would be appropriate for this show.
Avatar 11:01pm
Erica:

I don't remember that Larry, sadly. But the song Tasty should be on bubblegum compilations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - Which song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Funky16Corners:

@WR - The next cut and a couple of Atlanta guys in the last set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Jeff Ash:

"Welcome to Hollywood" from his 1980 LP "Snakes and Ladders."
Avatar 11:03pm

Hey it's Wolfman Jack!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Funky16Corners:

I'll check it out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
coelacanth∅:

i remember this one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm

DJ part of that Gerry Rafferty song comes near the end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Jeff Ash:

The Guess Who had pretty much jumped the shark by this point.
Avatar 11:07pm
Erica:

This song sounds familiar...I think I heard I heard it on a Halloween compilation before. Funny because I thought this song was about a werewolf when I heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Funky16Corners:

This was a pretty big hit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Jeff Ash:

Oh, yeah. 1974 was a strange time.
Avatar 11:09pm
Erica:

Or was that The Guess Who's version of "Shakin' All Over"? I know I heard "Clap for the Wolfman" before though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - I think most of the country was high
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
coelacanth∅:

my older sister liked Wolfman Jack. he must've joined wabc at some point, or wnbc maybe... i don't know where else she would've known him from.
Avatar 11:10pm
Erica:

Now THIS song, I like. WOLD was the inspiration for the theme for WKRP in Cincinnati as well as the sitcom itself.
  11:10pm
rw:

Yo. Any songs by F16 tonight?
  11:10pm
Dean:

Hmm, we might hear the theme song from WKRP in Cincinnati...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - The Wolfman ws on WNBC in NY in the early 80s. I used to work overnights in a newspaper composing room and he was on all night
  11:11pm
Dean:

Jinx, Erica!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Funky16Corners:

@rw - I wouldn't think to include myself in such august company
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Jeff Ash:

"WOLD" was one of the late-night free-form FM radio staples back then.
Avatar 11:11pm

I don't believe in jinxes Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
doctorjazz:

Great Chapin tune!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm

no, my sister liked the wolfman sometime between the late 60s and mid-70s. i barely knew her by the 80s.
was he syndicated or something maybe?
  11:13pm
Dean:

Don't say you don't believe in them! That assures they'll occur!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Funky16Corners:

That's a distinct possibility
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm

hey rw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm

oh that's it! the midnight special tv show. i used to watch that too!
  11:16pm
Dean:

Yes...but what happens?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
Funky16Corners:

He even did a record with Todd Rundgren the same year as the Guess Who record
  11:16pm
rw:

We were wondering at work the other day if the Ks and Ws had any meaning other than regional designation. I mean, does the K stand for somehting?
Avatar 11:16pm
Erica:

@Dean Nobody knows.
  11:21pm
Dean:

That's hella for sure, though eventually somebody might know. I'm interested in the literature addressing causality, which gets to this issue.

A student at my son's middle school saw me yesterday at school wearing a WFMU t-shirt. She remarked upon it favorably. I took the opportunity to explain that the letters were call letters to identify the station.

Sales died ten years ago yesterday, so reports Wikipedia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
coelacanth∅:

Larry i just read that Wolfman Jack was on wnbc starting in 1973, as well as occasionally hosting the midnight special. i would've known him from the midnight special but my sister probably knew him from wnbc as well.
he also did armed forces radio which was syndicated and widely distributed (as one would assume)

Sweet "Come Together" riff.
  11:29pm

That Same daughter "liberated" my Woof Moo sweatshirt (the dog and the cow). She doesn't listen, but just loved the jacket (do kids listen to radio? Mine just listen to Spotify on their phones for music).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
coelacanth∅:

i get comments all the time. rarely from kids but often from people probably in their 20s.
...if you were looking for me in my town and the person was local but didn't know me by name you could just say "the guy who wears all the wfmu tshirts"

I have an excess of WFMU stickers. I have them on my broadcast laptops, DJ box, and the automobile

Coel, I remember that! Only semi-related and completely irrelevant, as a kid I was driving a dump truck down the fwy and saw an overturned dump truck on the other side. Thought to myself, "That looks like Kent's truck. The nice new one that everybody wants to drive". Of course it WAS Kent's nice truck. Load spread out all over the place causing a traffic jam.

i must have a few dozen, though i don't know where some of them are. i often have waited when i thought i wouldn't have a car for too long; but that's very silly, as i generally drive my cars until i kill them.

I first discovered "The Nightfly" on a station called California Rock but didn't know what it was called at the time until earlier this year when listening to a yacht rock podcast. Pretty smooth, cool song.

ever since that buttermilk track i've been trying to think of a very funky song from back in the day that ended with the dude exclaiming about certain "soul" foods... it's gonna drive me nuts!
