Favoriting Bryce: Playlist from October 11, 2019 Favoriting

I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

Soooo, I've been replacing the crappy components in my office and sunroom stereos with Old School Cool equipment I've found in thrift shops. Was all excited to listen to the blendered music on the vintage 1980s Sanyo receiver/amp I scored last night for $40. Current office system is cobbled together stuff from over the years. Unnnnfortunately, I am having speaker difficulties. Is there anyone out there who may have suggestions on how to troubleshoot the system? It seems to be more complex than just swapping jacks. Send me a request if you feel like problem solving or just want to tell me I wasted $40

you're fighting the good fight, Phillippe! i have an Realistic receiver from the same era here at the homestead. it keeps blowing the same fuse when i power it on. haven't been able to figure out what is going on; neither have i the heart to throw it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm

Avatar 2:05pm
Bryce:

you too! no, it's the best, meeting real people in real life!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Biggest issue seems to be that I can play A speakers or B speakers but A and B speakers sound quality sucks when both are selected. And, of course, there is no subwoofer jack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm
coelacanth∅:

i read somewhere about how the wrong speaker wire can actually ruin your amp, or blow an amp's fuse. (because of incompatible resistance or impedance or something)
i use (& prefer) old equipment; but i admit some lack of understanding about soe things -that being one of those things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm
Phillippe Bastille:

No aux jack either, so probably using a 3.5 to RCA adapter isn't helping either. I have two Micca bookshelf speakers reae and some infinity bookshelfs for front (my office is only 10x10 so there isn't room for anuything bigger)
  2:10pm
mic_jack:

Can you get by with just A -or- B speakers? Source selection and tape monitor switching all good? Cables and speakers all copacetic on another amp? (running a 1979 Advent Model 300 here, so on the vintage team).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm
coelacanth∅:

haha Bryce! absolutely! but maybe one or two new people at a time! i would've liked to actually talk.
and i felt like some people might've thought what's he here for just to decorate an lp divider?!
(...which was not the original reason for being there!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm
Phillippe Bastille:

@coelacanth You know, I bet that does have something to do with it. I have two different sets of speaker wires, just pulled one off of each and they look like a different gauge. Any suggestions on how to tie in the sub?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm
Michael 98145:

is everything properly grounded?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm
Phillippe Bastille:

@mic_jack speaker wire set-up was fine on the old amp (an early LG surround amp from a $125 system). Totally different listening experience from what I mad before with only A or B before. Would likely go back to that before only going with two speakers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm
Phillippe Bastille:

@Michael looks to be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm
chris:

hard to remain grounded when listening to Bryce's show, in my experience
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm
coelacanth∅:

i'd check the speaker impedance first. if it's wrong maybe just one pair it can tolerate.
...and that amp might not be able to handle a subwoofer. what's the maximum wattage rating? how old is it?
people didn't use to use subwoofers in their homes.

On another thrift store electronics note, I picked up a Yamaha compact stereo/boom box from 1990 I have in another room that absolutely kicks ass. I didn't even know Yamaha made such a thing. I found a review on it and it said it was $799 list when it came out, which is $1700 in today's dollars. For a boom box!! Have no idea how loud you can play it before you get distortion because you can't stay in the room with it cranked past 3/10
