Afternoon! I'd heard about Gary Stewart's passing, but reading the obit above really drove it home for me. As a budding record dork growing up in the '90s, his work shaped me in ways I'm probably still only just grasping.

As usual, great tunes. Irwin, do you mind if I plug a worthwhile Gofundme for the great cartoonist, Gahan Wilson, who's dealing with severe dementia?

Jeez, he sounded like a great guy. Always breaks my heart when anyone, but especially someone like that, takes his own life. There has to be way we can work toward preventing that. There just has to be. Condolences on the loss of your pal, O'l Pal.

About Gahan Wilson: He's one of our great cartoonists, published in his books, National Lampoon, New Yorker, Playboy, etc. Friends and family are raising $ through Gofundme for the specialty care that he needs. They over halfway to their fundraising goal. :) You can read his son Paul's account of this and contribute at the link. Thanks! www.gofundme.com...

Also, I recommend the 2013 documentary "Born Dead, Still Weird" about Wilson. One reason for the title is that he would have died at birth except for a sharp doctor. Great film that shows many of his famous fans. And...you can watch him draw and drink from a measuring cup.

Gahan was before Gary Larson. Just sayin'.

There is no escaping the Indigo's Closer I Am to Fine. I was in Portland last week visiting my better half. She had a presentation to give in Vancouver, so I wandered around the Farmer's Market. An acoustic guitar duo was playing *that* song, and I all I could think of was Irwin's treatment. Big smiles.

Re: "Big Rock Candy Mountain": I had no idea Turks were ever stereotyped as hard-ass bosses, or just as jerks or villains in general. Or was that just an easy rhyme from before "jerk" was in common circulation?

Laura L:

@LOT--thanks for the info--didn't know. I was lucky to design the big book "Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Artists and Writers Who Made the National Lampoon Insanely Great" for my pal Rick Meyerowitz. It has a chapter with fine selections of Gahan's work and very nice text by Rick about Gahan. I'll make sure Rick knows if he doesn't already somehow. What a tough reality.
  5:06pm
flashbazbo:

@Laura: Cool! The Lampoon had great graphic style. I switched from Mad to the Lampoon very young. Gahan Wilson had a strip called "Nuts" about puberty. Hit close to home there. I remember Rick Meyerowitz did a mural of the whole watergate gang engaging in coprophagia, with Ketchup bottles in their hands. Tell him we need him back.
Avatar 👻 5:08pm
Listening Out There:

@flashbabo: Was just reading "Nuts" after seeing the documentary. Great series about growing up and grownups. Seems a heckuva lot more realistic than Calvin and Hobbes or Peanuts, though I like those too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
Parq:

I loved "Nuts" too, all the more because it was obviously about a city kid who lived in an apartment building. When I first started reading it, I didn't yet realize that this was a perspective that was about to disappear from the face of pop culture. I also loved GH's large-format cartoons, brilliant color renderings of scenes that would have done Charles Addams proud. "I Paint What I See", indeed.
  5:11pm
flashbazbo:

Hm. I only made the "peanuts" "Nuts" connection just now. I'm right on top of stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm
Irwin:

I don't know why this track is called "Raymond Scott." Doesn't contain any RS samples, doesn't quote his melodies, doesn't sound like RS. Guess it's just a quirky title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
Parq:

I never thought of the "Nuts" title as a riff on "Peanuts" -- the title panel always had a pic of an acorn, as in "mighty oaks from little acorns", and I figured "Nuts" was just a reference to acorns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm
Parq:

Irwin, intended as a tribute to him, maybe?
Avatar 5:16pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Electronic where RS is Mechanical?
.../ The Monster from the Id having a stroll contemplating Vince Guaraldi...
  5:23pm

@Parq: I always had the acorn as entendre #1, and certain pubertal sex characteristics, that descend, as #2. But it never hurts to have extra meanings around.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm

  5:25pm
Laura L:

The big Lampoon book has 4 of the Nuts pieces (and the first was published in Jan. 1972)! The book also has the wonderful "Strange Beliefs of Children" and "God Is Money." I must say the book is very worthwhile and was one of the most fun books I've done, because the material is great and Rick Meyerowitz is Rick Meyerowitz. Flashbazbo, he'll be amused you recall the Watergate gang.

Irwin, my wife and I have just heard 'Breaking Away' for the first time courtesy of your spin just now.
