Wow, some quote. All because she doesn't like jazz, I guess.

Good afternoon, fellow rumprollers.

Kenny G performs "The very best of Billy Joel"

Jazz should motion to you from an alley, and if you go to see what it wants it kicks you in the nuts and steals your wallet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
Hoboken Jack:

What up, dog? No idea why I just typed that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
Irwin:

A reaction to meds?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
The Oscar:

I got into an Uber once and the driver put in a Dave Koz CD, then immediately spent the entire ride talking about how wonderful Dave Koz is, and how Dave Koz makes the most beautiful music, and how he's never had a single passenger who didn't like him. The funniest part was that, in the moments between when I got in and when he started the CD, he was absolutely listening to "The Real Slim Shady."
  3:41pm
andrewb:

weren't Moondog and Philip Glass roommates at some point?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
Hoboken Jack:

Smooth jazz, soft rock, light classical, 80s country -- I guess there's a lame subset of everything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
Irwin:

Yes. Robert Scotto chronicles their odd pairing in his Moondog bio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
AnAnonymousParty:

Am I wrong to think when you hear some music that is labelled something-jazz it really isn't jazz at all. Something for sure, dunno what, maybe they too lazy to come up with a real description and just lumped it as jazz, because who knows what jazz is anyway?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
Irwin:

The term "jazz" is a journalistic and marketing convenience. That's all. However you want to label it, it's simply art.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
AnAnonymousParty:

Like pornography. OK, looks like I'm going home now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Radio Caprice has 35 different jazz streams, each with its own focus.
  4:03pm
berbo:

"Porno jazz" - making obscene noises with brass instruments that only weakly mimic music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Irwin:

I've always defined "free jazz" as a group of instrumentalists all soloing at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Free jazz is also that guy blowing on the sax by the subway entrance when you don't have any spare money
Avatar 4:11pm
Carmichael:

Heya Irwin and jazz lovers. Thomas Marriott sure gets a lot of FMU airplay. Deservedly so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Irwin:

Carm - Until recently he got none!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Irwin:

I overlooked this guy. He's terrific.
  4:15pm
Martinibomb:

Hiya Irwin. Usually doing my show in Sheenas Jungle room at the same time as yours but technical difficulties so I get to tune into yours today! Yay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
Irwin:

How did you get past the martinibomb-sniffing dogs?
  4:16pm
Martinibomb:

Animals like me for some reason :-)
Avatar 4:19pm
Carmichael:

I initially read the playlist as Cthulhu Waiting for Tabasco.
Avatar 4:20pm
Fredericks:

Irwin, your definition of Free-Jazz sounds rather similar to Ornette Coleman's description of Harmolodics.
  4:20pm
?:

What's the song playing behind you as you talk?
Avatar 4:21pm
Carmichael:

Oh yeah, never will tire of Scott.
  4:21pm
spodiodi:

NEXT! love this one
  4:21pm
Martinibomb:

Freejazz is making it up as you go along they have no idea what the next part of the progression or melody will be. That's my definition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
Irwin:

? = That was "Mi Cumbia" by Ramon Ropain
  4:23pm
KFJC-teabag:

Wait, this is a cover of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, right? Or was their vestion of "Next" a cover?
  4:24pm
?:

Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
Irwin:

Next was written by Jacques Brel, who died in 1967. Walker recorded his around 1968, Harvey around 1974.
  4:36pm
Martinibomb:

Checkin the Jacques Brel version right now.. which I don't hink I've heard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm

I contend the music in the cantina in the first Star Wars movie was the most far out jazz ever.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm

He's got a few solos out. Think he's pretty terrific. Saw THS live once and they were the LOUDEST fucking band. But then, I never saw Deep Purple live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Dunno why I always confuse The Hold Steady with The Gaslight Anthem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm
Irwin:

Stand by to be disappointed, Tommy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm
Tommy in Neversink:

Well even if it sucks from this point 2/3rds have been great so you can't fall below 66%
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm
Little Danny:

Huh. Whoa. This Donny Osmond is... good?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm
Irwin:

Cringey sax solo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm
Spankyflop:

I never saw THS or Deep Purple, but my ears are still ringing from a Dinosaur Jr. show in 1991.
  4:59pm
berbo:

Donny's dancing in Weird Al's "White and Nerdy" video is the best thing he's ever done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm
Little Danny:

Broadcast's HaHa Sound tour were the best loud shows ever
  4:59pm
Fashion Tashjian:

The one of the many commonalities making it easy to confuse TGS and THS is that they both play songs Springsteen meant to play but never recorded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm

man sax is in the air at WFMU these days

I think she may have also said something about how Nazis weren't that bad. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm

Sounds like something misquoted out of context. Don't know what she actually said, tho.

Great Gilberto Gil tune--never heard it before today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm

I always confuse OK Go with Oh OK. The former has better videos, tho.
  5:41pm
Mike tp:

Gilberto Gil. don't know much if not any of his catalog but this mushroom cut is tasty.
  5:44pm
Dean:

That Gil tune had a whiff of early King Crimson about it. Really.
  5:45pm
Mike tp:

  5:46pm

I would definitely confuse FUN. and Taxpayer, if their names weren't so different.

Judee Sill means the world to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm
Irwin:

Find the YT vid of Sill singing this song live on some UK TV show before she died young.
  5:49pm

Some of her best stuff was not on the Asylum LPs too. i think it's had a release this century.
