Recent News

I quit Instagram and Facebook and it made me a lot happier (CNBC, Dec 1): Christina Farr writes. "Getting off Instagram made me feel happier and lighter. I started to enjoy life's more mundane moments and take stock of what I have today - a great job, a wonderful community, supportive friends and so on. I could take my time and enjoy it rather than rushing to the finish line. In short, I started to feel happier and lighter."

How Instagram hides behind Facebook – and rakes in billions (Guardian, Dec 1). Remember to delete both Facebook and Instagram!

Marriott data breach hits 500 million guests (CBS News, Nov 30): "For about 327 million [people], the compromised information includes data such as names, mailing addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, passport numbers, Starwood Preferred Guest account information, date of birth, gender, arrival and departure information, reservation date, and communication preferences." See also the NYT story.

Mattress firm tells customers beds do not record them sleeping (Guardian, Nov 30): "Under a heading explaining which personal information Sleep Number collects, the company, which makes smart mattresses with adjustable firmness, said it 'may' collect 'audio in your room to detect snoring and similar sleep conditions' as well as sleep-related data such as 'movement, positions, respiration, and heart rate while sleeping'." The company's response: "Sleep Number’s products do not record audio. It was included in our privacy policy as we were developing a prototype with an auto-snore feature. That product was never launched and we’re working to clarify this in our policy statement."

WSJ Interview of Philip Krim, CEO of the online mattress seller Casper (Nov 21): "Eight hours will be the new 10,000 steps."

Google engineer calls for a walkout over China censorship and raises $200K strike fund in hours (BoingBoing, Nov 29): Liz Fong-Jones is at @lizthegrey.

The day Facebook’s boyish California charm ran out (The Star, Nov 27): "Much of the legislative scrutiny of Facebook has been focused on issues like protecting privacy rights and dealing with the proliferation of fake news. But these are mere symptoms. The disease is allowing companies like Facebook and Google to have such unchecked power."

Philippines journalist Maria Ressa vows to challenge tax fraud charges after arrest (Guardian, Dec 3). As past guest Siva Vaidhyanathan puts it: "This is what's happening in Duterte's Philippines. Remember: Zuckerberg loves Duterte, FB staff helped him run his campaign in which he promised to unleash bloodshed and destroy the rule of law, and FB has a deal with his government to lay fiberoptic cables in Manila Bay."

Daybreak, the Human:

I am a high school teacher and I have taught Brave New World many times. I’m glad Brian brought it up. It is important to this conversation.

The Soma and Social Media problem is that you can’t be happy or perfect all the time. Both of these are relative terms. If you’re always happy then happy becomes normal and normal is not happy. Happy is a special condition that is above/more preferable in that moment to normal. The same is true of perfect. It is impossible to be perfect all the time. The most we can do is get close. However on social media we are expected to be perfect constantly. If we are perfect constantly perfect becomes normal. If we then fail to be perfect we are failing to be normal. Worse, nothing in real life can actually meet that perfection because it’s impossible.
  6:48pm
JakeGould:

@BasNL: “I'm always puzzled by what kind of information people feel the need for sharing instantly.” The same information that is shared when you hang out with friends face to face.

Brian seems like he went through a lot, but as the resident contrarian, I say that the worst thing tech has brought us nowadays is easy access to log, track and accumulate data.

Sorry, but I hope Brian is happen now, but I don’t agree with a luddite perspective.

  6:53pm
JakeGould:

And regarding the condescending comment about phone cameras, I get riled up by stuff like that. I like photography. I think I am a decent photographer nowadays. But mainly because I have been able to hone my skills via digital photography. I had my first digital camera in 1998 and was finally free without fear of the cost of film or developing. I moved up to a DSLR but then ditched it when I got an iPhone. I love it! A camera in my pocket all the time without having to carry gear all the time? Sign me up.

I was poor as a kid and didn’t have the luxury income to deal with film cameras back in the day. Digital photography democratized photography.
