@Irwin-I was fortunate to see Sun Ra at Maxwell's in Hoboken in the early 90's. I told one of the guys in Sun Ra they were better than the Grateful Dead and he said "Yeah, we're the Grateful Living!". They played Elephants on Parade from Dumbo...that's all I remember.

Lyle:

Billy Cobham. There's a story. Panamanian, and a damned fine skinsman. I think we were in Texas at the time. Was it, Banderas? Kerrville, maybe? At any rate, it must have been '67 or '68. Way before Mahatmagishna or whatever that outfit was called that Billy was in when they had their 15-minutes of fame. I was playing piccolo trombone with Kurt Hirt (Al's brother) at that time, and things were not going particularly well. Al, of course, was on fire, hit after hit, especially "Java." That one really connected, and Kurt wanted a piece of the action. I recall we were playing the East Texas circuit, trying to get Kurt's single, "Tea Bag," to catch on. It never did. Still, one particular gig brought me face to face with Billy Cobham, who was with The Canals at that time, a Panamanian Top 40 band that had broken through back home, but wasn't having a lot of luck in the states. Their set consisted mostly of playing a couple of forgettable ditties and then letting Billy play a 50-60 minute solo. I recall distinctly, watching him from the stage apron, marvelling at his incredible talent as he unleashed his unique blend of ratamacues, and paradiddles in front of a mostly indifferent Texan audience who was there to see the headliner, Freddy Fender. At one pont, Billy motioned for me to come up on stage and join him in an impromptu jam. I did as he requested, only to be fired later by a very jealous and angry Kurt Hirt. A few years later, I was asked to audition for Mahatmagishna, but I had a prior commitment with Dick Jensen that I could not get out of. Billy was a great guy, and Spectrum was a great album. I sometimes wistfully imagine what a little piccolo trombone might have added to the mix, but I'll never know. Great show, Irwin. Always enjoy it.
