Lionizing the lost lamented old days of NYC is, in and of itself, getting really old. Yes, fellow commenters, I know, much of Manhattan has been taken over by chain stores. I'm over it. Many parts of Queens & southern Brooklyn are still incredibly distinctive and as Fabio points out every week, you can still see films you won't see anywhere else in the U.S. And the museums!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm

Popping my head up to say that the Wicker Man is a previously unknown cut that was discovered a few years back in the Harvard Film Archive. It includes a bunch of scenes that were previously only available in super rough tape transfers (including Christopher Lee's love song to copulating snails).
Avatar 4:23pm
TDK60:

Vertigo, eerie soundtrack for sure, never saw it in a theater, eating popcorn in the dark.

There's a funny story about Terrence Stamp on the DVD for "Priscilla". Seems the director took the three principals out for a night on the town in full Aussie drag to see how it worked. Stamp went into the bar, forgot how he was dressed, went immediately into rooster mode and couldn't understand why the women he hit on were looking at him with such baffled expressions.
  4:26pm
Mary Wing:

Stevel - my brother and I tend to add the line "YOU TELL THEM I'M FUCKING COMING" (from The Limey) to our emails to each other, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm

Avatar 4:30pm

@ike: Allow me to have my sour grapes!

@The Oscar: A few years back I saw that print (I want to say Film Anthology Archives, but I may be wrong).
  4:30pm
Gilly:

Now, we in Los Angeles are dealing with all the expat New Yorkers moving here and turning out city into the same. I've never loved NYC, but I'm starting to think it's a gentrification virus now, not a city
Avatar 4:32pm

@Gilly, you just said, "I've never loved NYC" -- so WTF are you moaning about? Zzzzzzz, bored now.
Avatar 4:32pm

Gentrification is hitting here in Gainesville, albeit in a smaller, slower, more tolerable scale. But some old haunts are gone for good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm

New York has been declared dead by people from other cities who hate it, many, many times, since the 70s and probably even earlier.
Avatar 4:35pm

Especially in the 70s, I think. It was thought of as another country, almost.

Avatar 4:36pm
TDK60:

NYC is dead, but here we are among the ruins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
Parq:

Still is. And despite the Giuliani-ites, most of us like it that way. David Sedaris once proposed that NYC's official motto should be a Latin translation of "We don't like you, either."

Heh heh, Parq. That Sedaris, what a chucklehead.

@ike I said that I never loved the place in the first place BUT I'm actually starting to think of it as the plague rather than a city. One that is affecting MY city. That's what I'm moaning about. Curious: do your parents pay your rent?
  4:43pm
Gilly:

Btw how's the weather right now LOL
Avatar 4:43pm
geezerette:

"Gentrification" ,the deadly sameness,is global. There's so much to say about it that I'll refrain except to say that the ugly ghost of Ayn Rand looms over the planet like intellectual smog. (I will now duck as bricks are thrown my way...no personal offense meant to anyone here, this is a splendid assemblage.)
  4:44pm
Gilly:

@parq correction: people have been declaring NYC as a shithole since the 70s. It's only since Giuliani and maybe even 9/11 that it's been consistently declared as "Dead".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
Michael 98145:

Avatar 4:44pm

@Gilly: I love LA, but I prefer the weather in NYC to LA. The weather in LA is boring. I like a change in in seasons. I love winter. Of course, I'm stuck in FL, where the weather is even worse then LA, so, you got me there.
  4:45pm
Gilly:

Gentrification is, indeed, global. Methinks it originates in NY though. Or Dubai. Same shit at this point

hi kids. why do people think they 'own' a town or city? we're just microbes inhabiting a host that gets older, fatter, thinner, richer, poorer - it's inevitable that we get sneezed out to infect something new.

WFMU still exists (in Jersey City of course, not Manhattan) so that's what's important as far as I'm concerned. And some of the most interesting immigrant neighborhoods in the world are in places like Bensonhurst, Sunset Park, Woodside, Elmhurst, Flushing... yeah so the old East Village is gone, but I mean, what can you do? And no, I'm middle-aged and pay my own damn rent, in Sunset Park. Also @Dale makes good points.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
Michael 98145:
