Down here in the South, there's "might could," which I'm still trying to wrap my head around after a couple decades. As in, hey, I'm moving next weekend and I could use a couple strong backs. Can I count on you? "I might could do that."

Lyle:

Mose Allison. There's a story. Many people have probably forgotten Mose' brief stint with The Pozo Seco Singers as the 60's gave way to theb 70's. Truth is, lots of jazz artists were doing double-duty with pop groups at that time just to make ends meet. As good as Mose was, he still had bills to pay and the Pozos helped him pay them. Of course, The Gentle Giant, country legend Don Williams, was in the band at that point and had yet to distinguish himself as the unique talent he would later gain recognition for possessing. Instead, Don would often be found onstage, hunched in the darkness back by Mose on the piano. I saw this first hand, as the outfit I was with at that time, We Four, now down one member since their one hit, You Were On My Mind, opened several dates for the Pozos along the northern tier of states, circa 1969. It was Mose who pushed Don Williams forward and into the spotlight, encouraging the soft country crooner to foist his songs upon the Pozos and to formulate the nucleus of a style that would propel him to fame. Williams reciprocated by bringing Mose extra donuts to his bunk on the bus, and offering up cigarettes and cans of Hamm's when they were in short supply. As for me, I spent a little time with Mose, but I hadn't much to offer. He had little interest in my trombone, or in me as a person. I suppose my own neediness at that time, I was practically friendless, might have caused Mose to recoil a little when I tried to show him my matchbook collection, or, offered to toss a Frisbee around with him in one of the many parking lots our touring vehicles occupied on the road. This is not to say Mose wasn't kind, for he was. One night he gave me an individual Lincoln Log, though I'm not sure why. Whatever the reason, I kept it, and to this day I treasure it and take it out from time to time to admire and consider it. Those were such fleeting and heady times.
  5:37pm
Dean:

Original title of that BT&tMGs song was "When Something is Seriously Wrong with My Baby."

Lyle:

Dean, Don Wiliams nickname is The Gentle Giant. Interestingly, I did do a short series of gigs with GG in '71, when they were on a bill with Art Brown and his Crazy World. Soon after, GG jettisoned horns and bought a synthesizer. Had they not, I believe they might have become the next Rare Earth or Chase.
  5:42pm
Dean:

Ha! Some coffee in Berkeley does require crowd-funding. I used to head north when friends who have since moved to Kensington, near Berkeley, were there. Still have other friends in Sacramento, but just don't make it up there too often anymore.
