john simon sure is controversial, but when i contacted hundreds of theater critics to review a tiny production i was involved with, his 91-year-old self was one of the only people to actually give me the dignity of a reply. he declined, saying something along the lines of "if i give you a review they'll all want one," but he was very cordial.
