Woke up this morning around 3 AM to wrestle with my usual demons.
Found myself listening to a Scott Carrier podcast (in lieu of chemistry).
Mr. Carrier had incorporated into his own work, a Joe Frank piece about an ascent of K2.
This led me to scroll around for another Joe Frank audio tale.
Then another etc. and soon it was daylight.
I will miss Mr. Frank's unique gifts, (as will my demons).

i think you've really hit on some of the magic of Joe Frank there, LL. it wasn't just the amazing stories he was weaving for us. it wasn't just the amazing production quality of the work, with the always exceptional background music. the sum seemed greater than the parts. we are there with him, transported into his stories. the shows have an ability to leave us thinking about our own lives, beliefs, experiences. they can be transformational. one of a kind, unparalleled story-telling.

Listener Robert:

A month ago Listener Steve, who'd been living with me, died. When I moved in with him the previous year I knew he might pop off any time, but when his death did come, the circumstances were very stressful to me & other friends because of our suspicion of his estranged daughter, who administered his living will and had him declared incompetent. Maybe she did the right thing, but you couldn't convince us.

I started listening to Joe Frank when he had his own slot on WFMU. He made a statement on air during a spring marathon around the turn of the century, after his shows had been off WFMU a few years, to the effect that FCC restrictions had made it not worth his while to produce any more shows for radio, but to please donate to WFMU anyway and maybe some day those restrictions would be gone or surmounted.

i must admit i don't know any stories of the collaboration, or any horror stories about Andy. of course rundgren was an excellent producer, when he tried - which was a solid sometimes; and he had at least one great album and some decent ones, where his terrible singing wasn't quite as terrible...it's just HIM, as a person that i loath! the stories of his out of control ego and disrespect and temper tantrums go all the way back to when he worked with badfinger, at least.
i liked him enough to see him c.1981, but bit by bit i lost my tolerance for him - except for something anything - the sole basis for him ever becoming famous.

Oh man...
What to say about Joe Frank...
I feel like he goes back almost to childhood - when I didn't even know enuff to tell his sonorous tones & mysterious pronouncements on the ray-deeoh from say, KenNordine's...; I guess he started his programs around 1977? So - adolescence I guess... I remember no introduction - he was just there on Public Radio. Like when I 1st saw Monty Python - around about then also: Life as you knew it kid is over...
Later - when I moved to SantaBarbara in SouthernCalifornia - I would her him from his then home of KCRW - & relate in a whole other way...
Someone once said about JimiHendrix: He founded a unique School - from which he is still the only Graduate...in obviously a whole different way - I feel that's true about Joe too: such a distinct & impactful Artist...True - I have learned a little more about Radio History, & his possible antecedents (Jean Shepherd
Before I became familiar w/ the word 'Existentialism' - JoeFrank had already taken my callow mind far out into those waters...
- - 'Are Answers better than Questions?' - -
Perhaps now, joining the Greater Force, Joe has Answers he has long pondered...& perhaps even, new Questions...

J:

Rundgren has produced so many hit records, there's a book cataloging all of them. Excellent chapter of Skylarking. I'd hardly characterize him as hit or miss. His own work, of course, is subjective; but A Wizard A True Star is an unparalleled psychedelic masterpiece.

Passaic River Blues:

I was surprised by the number of random people I came across on Instagram mourning Joe. It was heartening.

Joe Frank is one of those literary geniuses (like a Baudelaire or Bruce Chatwin) whose nimble wit and singular voice required the creation of a new, hybrid genre for full expression. No one was doing what he did before he did because it just didn't exist. Every episode of "The Other Side" is like an invitation into a sui generis, world-class brain. I heard occasional bits of Frank over the years, but it was here that I really had continued, thoughtful exposure to him and for that I am thankful.

I first heard Joe Frank on this program about a year and a half ago, driving back to suburban NJ after an expedition to Haverstraw. What madness could this be, my friend and I wondered, careening in and out of the broadcasting radius along the curves of route 9W, remaining tuned and intrigued despite the persistent radio static. Our car moved slowly and cautiously on the one-lane road, trapped for many miles in the middle of an armada of 18-wheelers, as though Joe's broadcast had conjured the surreal scene.
