Hey Irwin, Ron, Stevel, Ken, Bronwyn in advance! Happy new year! I'm back in Hoboken where some would say I belong.

Good day and HNY, Jack. Stay indoors where we all belong, at least for now.

I heard there was an alternate take of that song that made it about a "love that dare not speak its name." It was called "Ode to Bill and Joe."

Back when albums were $5, I bought that Kaptain Kopter album for $13. I felt like I got ripped off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
zopa:

I blame the French.
  3:35pm
Dean:

"Back when albums were $5..." IIRC, my first day at work at a record store in Southern California, early '78, was the day the store (a small chain) increased its regular one LP album price from $2.99 to $3.99. My first chore was to relabel the inventory.

Can that be right? A 33% increase overnight?
  3:36pm
Dean:

Or let's say you're hungry, and you stumble into a vacant home with three bowls of porridge on the table. The first one is too hot, the second is too cold. Should you try the third? What about taking a nap in one of the three beds?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
rrg:

Could be. In the 1960s comic books jumped overnight from 10 cents to 12 cents (20%), and then from 12 to 15 (25%), and then from 15 to 20 (33%).
Avatar 3:37pm
glenn:

why not? the price of gas probably went up 6 or 7 times pvernight. same raw material.
  3:39pm
Dean:

At the time, I believe the MSRP for LPs was closer to five bucks, but the chain was competing with another, more well known chain at the time, as well as a number of department stores with record departments, hence the discount.
Avatar 3:40pm
glenn:

okay, maybe not 6 or 7 times, but probably at least a 60% increase.
  3:40pm
Jack:

When comics went from a dime to 12 cents, it fucked my life up so bad, I'm still haven't recovered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
rrg:

I never worked in a record store but I sometimes went into them. In the early 1970s the groovy record store in my town had two prices for single-LP albums: $3.77 and $4.44. Depending on, I don't know, the label or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
crateslinger:

They probably were losing money at $2.99 but were going for market share, then BAM!
  3:43pm
Jack:

I got Blue Cheer, Temptations, Beach Boy albums and others in the discount bins for under a dollar.
  3:43pm
gekko hopman:

Bonjour from Rouen, Normandy, France. AWESOME PLAYLIST!
  3:44pm
Dean:

Yeah, the bargain label classical stuff (which I adored) generally ran $1.99, even post price-hike. But imports--mostly prog--imposed heftier demands.
  3:44pm
Jack:

And root beer was a nickel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm

Michael Jeffery, Hendrix's manager, co-hosted an episode of The Music Factory one week in 1968 when Tom Wilson was away.

In 2009 a roadie for the Animals (whom Jeffery also managed) published a book in which he claimed that Jeffery murdered Hendrix--literally--for financial reasons.

@rrg: Jeffrey claimed to be former MI5 - Brit equivalent of CIA - & is characterized as shunning exposure - so that's interesting!
