There was a time in the '90s, perhaps, when it seemed like every trendy restaurant was playing Cesária Évora. Correction: "...every trendy restaurant I managed to visit," which wasn't a whole lot, but still, I can't listen to her records to this day.

Mark R:

He had a wicked tone--I'm sure guitar players could explain what guitar he used and what settings and everything, but it had a groovy, liquidy, echoey sound, really beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
Marcel M:

Well, he used one of the most legendary guitars ever. It was a 59 Les Paul. In and of itself very valuable. But his has become legendary. Kirk Hammett bought it recently! After Gary Moore had it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm
Marcel M:

It was out of phase in the middle position, which he used sometimes, and it created a kind of eerie sound. Thats a fairly common trick now, but the word is, that back then, he dropped off the pickup to be repaired, and they put the magnet in the wrong way without realizing it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
Marcel M:

Peter Green sold it to Gary more for a really low sum. After he kind of lost it he wanted him to have it but Gary felt weird taking it for nothing. Later on, a few guys got Peter a new Burst, and he ended up giving it away to a guy in his elevator building. It was later recovered in a pawn shop.
Avatar 4:42pm
Cecile:

donutsu, she was born here, but her family lineage is all Finnish.
  4:46pm
P=90:

No, @mrdonutsu, that's a different "collectible" Les Paul- but mainly because of the history of who it has belonged to, not some unique sonic quality of the instrument. And Peter Green's Les Paul was likewise not such an extraordinary instrument. It was Peter Green's style, bot the guitar. He would have sounded great on any Les Paul, or any guitar he chose.

Is Fabio doing this on purpose? I think he is. Clicks while people are going on about magnet placement. This isn't coincidence, sheeple!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:53pm
mrdonutsu:

It's very interesting - the relationship between the musician and the instrument - particularly with electric guitars. Its such a dude thing to fetishize the instrument (e.g. Paul Allen) and neglect that it was the musician and not the player who imbued the magic thereinto.

But there certainly are uniquely magical combinations.

While you can tear apart Jimmy Page for the blatant ripoff he pulled with White Summer / Black Mountain Side, for me there is pure genius in his choosing to then perform it on a $30 Danelectro.

  5:03pm
Linda Lee:

fact is that amazing new pharmaceuticals were coming into wide distribution at that time. i don't thin we can downplay the impact on the public mind.
  5:04pm
P-90:

Just to clarify: Green's "Fleetwood Mac" Les Paul came back from a repair job with some small idiosyncrasies that made some slightly different sounds available. But there was really nothing so special about that guitar. Remember, Les Pauls were rare at that time, and English musicians coveted them and were fascinated by every one that came along. There's been this legend that Peter Green sounded so great partly because he used a particular guitar. He actually sounded great because he was a great musician. @Narcel: Also, the same shop that reversed the magnet on that neck pickup also rewound the coils with the "wrong" gauge of wire, which also made it sound just a bit different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
