The Andy Breckman Seal of Approval. Can't tell if it's sincere or sarcastic, though. (I presume that's Andy Breckman...the signature isn't entirely readable.)

Marysville, KS : Not sure if still this way, but it used to be a haven for retired circus performers. Some interesting patrons in local bars, diners, parks, etc . . .

It also reminds me of the Jandek chestnut, "if you want to know why I'm a man, it's because I don't want to be a woman"

Jesus, what a day. Just tuning in, Irwin. Saw you replied to my email, but haven't had the chance to look at it. Thanks for getting back to me, though!

@Irwin-I have NEVER HEARD of this West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. Cool! THIS is why I listen to WFMU. Thanks!

Speaking of Raymond Scott, Mr. Host Sir, I saw your name in the credits for "Best of Enemies," since you do some of the rights wranglin' for Scott music, right? Good documentary...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
Irwin:

Terrific movie, LOT. They used Scott's "Portofino" under the opening credits. Highly recommended viewing.

Ah. It was hidden under the opening credits! No wonder I couldn't remember where in the heck it was...

So great! I've always loved that music. I just never thought to find out who it was!
Avatar 4:19pm
Wild Neil:

@Geezerette-does the wildlife start to synchronize actively with the music like the music is causing the action or is it more subtle than that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm

Follow-up to Neil's question: Is there mescaline involved?

I was fixing to play this very track on my show tomorrow and I didn't even know it was Ellington's birthday. Not fooling!

me too! Beth sounds fantastic.
  5:01pm
Listener Robert:

This shows the paradox of a big production: Everything you add takes something away, because one's att'n can hold only so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm

Beth is a big fan of Blossom.

Thanks for the Beth S. Irwin. Gorgeous... She needs to release something soon. Suddenly Tammy is too far back now....
  5:03pm
Listener Robert:

Makes me wonder if "Nothing Compares" would be even more moving without ANY music. And in a speaking rhythm rather than a poetic one.

The point being, if it's art, then it's not real.
  5:04pm
Listener Robert:

But if it weren't art, and it was just someone we were eavesdropping on, say via a phone tap, would we even pay att'n?
Avatar 5:05pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Nietzsche: Art is better than Life...That's why we keep him around...he bowls good too - 'specially on Thoirsdays...
Wull - let Joe Frank set 'em up & we'll found out...
  5:05pm
Listener Robert:

We'd probably pay att'n if it were somebody we ALREADY cared about, but it probably wouldn't GRAB us as strangers.
Avatar 5:06pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...an 'intimate' song...
  5:09pm
Listener Robert:

That really got me thinking. For the past week, starting for reasons I don't remember, I've been listening & watching videos of performances or productions of "The Dream Police" over & over. Would I pay att'n if it were some lunatic on the street -- which role Richard Neilsen plays very well -- saying exactly the same thing?
  5:12pm
burpage:

ah frank thanks irwin
  5:13pm
Listener Robert:

I don't think I would pay att'n to such a thing. But it's a great musical composition, and it may help that the lyrics are pure fiction to keep the audience from being repelled by the whole thing. So making things UNreal can get us to listen & watch, so we don't have to be bothered by our rxn if it were a true story.
Avatar 5:14pm
Fredericks:

This sounds like Beefheart unplugged.

Irene played a killer Zappa set last night. Making me think I gotta get more Zappa...but where to start?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
Irwin:

This Scrawl album was recorded at Paisley Park Studios.
  5:32pm
Listening Out There:

For more Zappa, "Hot Rats," of course...
  5:34pm
Listener Robert:

This is much better than the hard, allegro version that usu. gets played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
Irwin:

Hot Rats is a great place to start for a taste of Zappa as a composer and arranger, without the groupie gags and vaudeville sthick.
  5:37pm
Listening Out There:

Hot Rats just came to mind since I read a great account by Max Bennett, who played bass on the session. Bennett was a regular in the Wrecking Crew (session musicians). Well, that, and it's prob my favorate Zappa album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm
Irwin:

"Peaches en Regalia" is absolute genius. Stunning arrangement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm
Mike East:

will check out Hot Rats. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
Irwin:

Just don't start with "Willie the Pimp" from HR. Atypical of the album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
Mike East:

noted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm
Michael 98145:

Wow. I never realized the Byrd's "I Wasn't Born to Follow" was written by CAROLE KING, GERRY GOFFIN.
Avatar 5:48pm
Jeff:

Yeah, I've always admired Zappa for his smarts and musicianship but been turned off by the dumb leering potty humor I kept hearing. I should find my way through that minefield to identify the pieces I actually like.

Hello everybody. I'll chime in with a Zappa lp I really love. WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH.
