JakeGould:

“The Force Awakens” is just a remake of “A New Hope” but it’s also more. Disney owns Marvel and now owns Lucasfilm. In the Marvel universe they just regurgitate the same story over and over again. And the fact “The Avegners” worked is a wet dream: Each character can have their own series and minor characters (like “Antman”) have a reason to be revived.

Which is to say this new “Star Wars” series is going to be less about pushing new stories and better story telling to the world than rather just elevate fan fiction to an art AND create tie-in products. Like how C-3PO had a red arm? They won’t reveal that in the film. But for $5 you can buy a comic that explains that small backstory if you wish.

The new films will just be barely built frameworks to hook into other media. Like “Star Wars: Battlefront” is considered a part of the “Star Wars” canon now.

The marketing cross-pollination is bigger than the Death Star now.

Avatar 1:46am

The red arm will be explained in a comic book coming out in February that reunites the 1990s DC Comics Starman's writer and artist [James Robinson and Tony Harris respectively].
  1:46am
JakeGould:

@PSS: Red Arm = Red Army? C-3PO is a Commie? Or in the “Star Wars” universe he would be known as a sympathizer to the “Collective?”

My "secret Santa" this year gave me a bottle of Bombay Sapphire and a bunch of chocolates. Such a girly gift, yet I'm enjoying regardless...
  1:48am
JakeGould:

@BadGuyZero: Yeah, I mentioned that in my wordy comment. So now you have to pay $10-15 for the movie and then buy a comic on top of that to have plot pieces put together? This is all getting crass. I want movies not platforms for “synergy” between media.

Except for the white chocolates. Screw them.
Avatar 1:50am
BadGuyZero:

@JakeGould: I didn't see your comment until after I had posted mine. At least the comic isn't vital to enjoying the film. I thought it was dumb that DC Comics released their Mad Max: Fury Road prequel comics AFTER the movie came out since those comics provided the backstory for the new characters.

  1:54am
JakeGould:

@BadGuyZero: Yeah, but still… Those are trees in a forest. In the original trilogy there was no need to cross-pollinate content across media. Nowadays, all of these movies are just true 2 hour commercials for other product. This article explains the Disney mentality quite well. My best thought? Maybe the “Disney Vault” can see fit to officially release Blu-Ray versions of the original/unspecial trilogy films for the rest of us old folks to enjoy. www.vox.com...

My ex could not watch James Bond movies, because a Bond girl always got killed. She took it as an affront to the female gender, and I can't argue.
  2:08am
JakeGould:

@BGZ Yes, I know those fanmade despecialized editions exist. I have DVD transfers of the letterboxed laserdiscs. That's still not the point. Officially releasing the original films in a modern media format by Disney would be a nice way to make old school fans feel welcome. If they are just rebooting things for a new generation then it makes sense to make the original films available; one won't compete with another.
  2:10am
JakeGould:

@PSS: Star Trek is great as an ongoing story since there has always been a vast structure for the characters to exist in. Next Generation was not a reboot of the original series and both series work well together.

And... Happy b-day to Therese's mom as well!

The problem with Star Wars begins with the beginning: "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...."

You start from there, you lose the first-hand connection to the intelligent reader.

@PSS To be fair, George Lucas got the idea for that from Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time..." films.

wicked !! yea
  2:45am
JakeGould:

@PSS Samuel R. Delaney (sci-fi author) has a great review of the new film up on Facebook. His main complaint was at least with the 1977 film there was an effort to truly pick and choose good ideas for the film. And the end result was something that was an homage to tons of things while feeling new. This 2015 film is just so self referential and the few moments new ideas pop up, they are not really played out well.
  2:48am
JakeGould:

Also Scorsese and Spielberg constantly create new things that might reference the past and things they admire but create completely new things.
Avatar 2:50am
BadGuyZero:

Quentin Tarantino's entire film career has been built on "borrowing" elements from other movies he likes.

Hi guys!

First of all, welcome back, Therese!

Secondly, I'm glad you're okay, BadGuyZero; that was some rough weather we had in D/FW on Saturday, huh?
  2:51am

Tarantino is better at mixing those ideas into something new than others. Not to sure about this new film though.

@Steve-O: Indeed it was. Did you make it through unscathed?
Avatar 2:52am
BadGuyZero:

That special remix of "Water World" sounded like noises from Sonic The Hedgehog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54am
pacific standard simon:

I'll have to look that up, Jake. My gripe with Star Wars is that the whole franchise is about mythic hero epics with nothing new added except special effects and weapons.
Avatar 2:55am

What made Star Wars was the special effects. Without them, it is a well worn story.

@BGZ: Yeah, we're okay here in Frisco; no real damage to speak of.
  2:58am

  3:00am
JakeGould:

@PSS The thing is at least "The Empire Strikes Back" showed some maturity. Based on the new film and the prequels it seems like that one film might been a mistake.
  3:00am
Steve-O:

@BGZ: So, hopefully, nothing else happens for a while in terms of severe weather.....bring on wintertime!
