Oh right, today's the day! Man, I've been looking forward to this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm
ChrisB.:

Ha! At first I thought this was going to be the 1-877-KARS FOR KIDS song. AM radio has ruined me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm
Irwin:

Is this accu-comments thing working?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
fred:

It seems to work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
fred:

It just seems like you're not interesting enough to spur comments yet. Maybe you need a better combover
  3:28pm
blob dobbs:

I believe the band name is Zest of Yore, and the album title is Quality of Life:

I'm listening out there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
fred:

Phew, I'm out of Irwin-ego-smoothing duty, which would have ended in disaster, especially for me. (this guy is a deity)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
Irwin:

I'll take your word for it, Blob. There is a song called "Quality of Life," but there isn't one called "Zest of Yore."
  3:33pm
Laura L:

I am in whistle while you work mode.
  3:35pm
berbo:

You whistle, I say France
  3:37pm
blob dobbs:

Yeah, that page is confusing Irwin. But it does show three albums by Zest of Yore, one called Quality of Life. Great band though, I obviously had to look them up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
fred:

@Irwin: Thanks, I laughed so much while seeing this. Amy Schumer rules
  3:42pm
JakeGould:

Good afternoon. May the heat of the past few weeks disappear in the next few hours as rain hits the NY/NJ area.

Listening Out There:

Caetano Veloso also does a good version of this Hendrix song...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
Mike East:

nice, fred. Its a bit offputting that I know the One Direction song that they are parodying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Mike East:

I gotta hear that, LOT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
fred:

@Mike East: OK, I think the joke's on me, I don't know who One Direction are. Irwin crushed me again
  3:54pm
Listening Out There:

Mike, the cut is on Tropicalia 2, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso
  3:56pm
Keith:

Irwin, there aren't many DJs I can rely on to present new (or old) music that I haven't heard - that I'll like, I mean. There are 3 CDs I've bought in the last month as a result of listening to your show. Thank you, and keep it up, please!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
Mike East:

@fred - you shouldn't unless you had a tween daughter...and even then you should try to keep that stuff outta the house. I've failed at that
Avatar 4:04pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...late, & just in time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
fred:

@Mike East: Yet Irwin does it, how does he pull it off at his age?
  4:06pm
JakeGould:

Now that Barrence has mentioned Chris Christie and being a “full grown man” when was the last time Chris Christie saw his own “hoo hah.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
Irwin:

Fred: I'm a full-grown man!
Avatar 4:07pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

OMG Barrence Whitfield & the Savages bring it. I love this band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
Irwin:

Thanks, Keith. Just sharing stuff I like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
Mike East:

@fred - Irwin is a unique and amazing individual. I don't know how he does it. That's why he's got the mic, and we just listen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
fred:

@Irwin: Thanks for sharing. And that goes for a lot you've been sharing with a lot of effort on your part to make it happen. Take your minds off the gutter, he's a hero
Avatar 4:13pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Always thot Brian in UK said it well on his profile:
...'We are normal and we want our freeform, yes FMU is the home of radio that has grown up. A sophisicated system that hides behinds a seemimgly juvenile facade'...
- It's easy to take it for granted...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
Irwin:

All the amateurism of college radio -- without the basketball games.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
Irwin:

Where the shunned shine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm
Mike East:

goddamn, these guys rock so much. Will they be holding auditions for tambourine players or anything? Cuz I can really shake it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
fred:

@Mike East: I've been sharing Amy's skits for a while, should I switch to damage control mode with people who have teenage daughters? More to the point: did I seriously fuck up there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm
Mike East:

not at all, fred...they will find it particularly humorous as I did. She's a funny gal, and I think a good influence on the young women of today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm

...and men.

Great set! I almost felt as if I was there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Irwin:

Jon's dad, George Flores, hosted a Christian rock program (The David & Goliath Show) on WFMU for 25 years. George and Barrence were buds back in '75/'76 too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm

Tom Lehrer! There's a guy who knows what's what.
Avatar 4:45pm

Do I have the story right he had a terminal disease that influenced his outspokenness?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
Irwin:

Who?
Avatar 4:46pm
Jeff:

In a similar vein... just a couple of days ago I found myself humming

"Remember Mommy
I'm off to get a commie
So send me a salami
And try to smile somehow..."
  4:47pm
Listener Robert:

If it's Lehrer, he's been doing very well with that illness all this time!
Avatar 4:48pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah I guess not.
Ramones got the 'Commando' chorus from Lehrer, apparently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm
Irwin:

RRN63: Define "terminal."
  4:50pm
berbo:

I'm sorry Mr. Lehrer. You've only got 6 or 7 decades at most left to live.

Time for me to go

Hoboy. Just now in the NY Times: Billie Holiday often sang about being blue, but when she appears at the Apollo later this year she’ll be closer to translucent. The Apollo has partnered with Hologram USA to bring extended, permanent hologram technology to the theater. Ms. Holiday, who performed at the Apollo in the flesh nearly 30 times, will be the first, and is scheduled to debut around Thanksgiving.

  5:32pm
Laura L:

You get the vacuuming done during Dr. Kurtz's program?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm

No, LL. I cleaned up the mess o' snacks and soft drinks left over from the Barrence hospitality table upstairs.
