This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Wow Glenn that's really something

they're going to take over the world. forget the insects.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Uncle Michael:

Our raccoons would climb 58 stories if they thought there were tortillas up there.
Avatar 7:20pm
Flash Strap:

They're basically the octopus of the land: freaky smart, alien, frighteningly capable
Avatar 7:20pm
hyde:

nice. i found a raccoon on my 4th floor balcony once in cambridge, but i guess that's nothing.
Avatar 7:22pm
Flash Strap:

I love the vocals on this track, s Baxter, yet so French soundtrack
Avatar 7:25pm
glenn:

i like them. i know they're a complete pain in the ass, but they are everything flash says.
Avatar 7:27pm
ndbob:

I have a friend who used to fed them until it got out of control - 40 once in her back yard
Avatar 7:27pm
Flash Strap:

I grew up with chickens, so I was essentially trained by circumstance to view them as the enemy, but they are so magical and intelligent I can't help but love them now. The HANDS
Avatar 7:28pm
hyde:

@Glenn they are cool. and they're bold as hell. in the town i grew up in, i came home one night, opened the garage door to park the car and spied a raccoon going through the garbage. he paused for a second to check me out, and then went straight back to pawing through the garbage.
Avatar 7:29pm
ndbob:

I'm more of a rat person though
Avatar 7:29pm

Rats are cool, too.
Avatar 7:38pm

This one has that Touch of Evil sense of hot Latin sweat and misdeeds about to be done in torrid black and white
Avatar 7:40pm
Flash Strap:

This one too. So noir
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Uncle Michael:

Is that Joseph Conrad having a drink with Somerset Maugham?
Avatar 7:43pm
Flash Strap:

Well, it better not be Pierre Loti sipping absinthe with Montesquieu! I told them to take a few days off before they wreck my place again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
Doug Schulkind:

Many of our WFMU brethren and sistren are want to pronounce the name Ro-ZHAY Ro-ZHAY. I like Rodger Rodger better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
Uncle Michael:

My latest library music spelunk is into British tv test card music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
Gary:

Howdy!
Avatar 7:58pm
Flash Strap:

Huh, I bet that's actually pretty accurate, though I wonder if it would have such a hard ZHAY, or more of a ZHER. Still, it's the hard G for me
Avatar 7:58pm
Flash Strap:

Howdy Gary! Amazing show yesterday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm

I'd have assumed Ro-ZHER

Sorry I missed it, Gary. I've missed a lot lately...for various reasons. Sometimes the reason is baseball and/or hockey, I'm afraid. Last night it was "and."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm

Careful with that assuming thing, UM.

Hello, you primal old fish you. You're most welcome in this fish tank
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Gary:

That last track was off the charts. How have I never heard of Nardini before?
Avatar 8:15pm
Flash Strap:

You know, you don't look much like a coelecanth. Are you sure you're not a chimera?
Avatar 8:16pm
Flash Strap:

Man, I am so pleased, just pleased a punch, if I get to be the fellow who introduces you to Nardini. He is so cool.
  Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
coelacanth:

i promise i wont eat any other fish while i'm here.
Avatar 8:21pm
Ike:

@UM, yes, but only 75-watt bulbs.
Avatar 8:24pm
Flash Strap:

What do you guys want to hear next week? I'm thinking all-Donovan, but I could do a big non-exotic jazz/electronic Umiliani marathon. Or mystery bag Exotica.
  Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
coelacanth:

(...i wont say my parents didn't cross some boundaries.)

glenn - Thanks for that interesting link, but i see no racoon in the photo.
(?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
Gary:

Donovan!
Avatar 8:25pm
hyde:

@Flash I do love Umilani so....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
Gary:

But, wait -- who is it then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
Uncle Michael:

Peter O'Toole played Eric Swann in the biopic.
Avatar 8:33pm
hyde:

according to this piece in the 2008 Best Music writing, it sounds like the fake Nino Nardini record was put out by a guy named Gabe Roth, who apparently did a lot of fake records on Desco books.google.com...
Avatar 8:37pm
Flash Strap:

Thanks for trackin that down, Hyde
Avatar 8:41pm
Flash Strap:

Man, Roger is such a playful composer, so full of little tricks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Doug Schulkind:

Bloody hell this is good.
Avatar 8:43pm
Flash Strap:

So it's Gary vs. Hyde on the Donovan/Umiliani debate?
Avatar 8:44pm
hyde:

i guess he's the Daptone Records guy. he says in the piece that they mainly put out the fake records because they sold, whereas when they put out the same music under a real name no one wanted to buy it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm holding out for a Edmundo Ros/Piero Piccione throwdown.
Avatar 8:44pm
Ike:

Wild.
Avatar 8:47pm
Flash Strap:

UM- Oh, boy. I'd have to really prep for that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
Gary:

Hyde should win - he found out who the fake Nardini was
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
Uncle Michael:

James Last/Les Humphries?
Avatar 8:50pm
ikє:

Do you mean "Hurdy Gurdy Man" Donovan, or some other Donovan?
Avatar 8:50pm
Flash Strap:

There is only one Donovan that I even want to know about, and it is he of the Hurdy Gurdy
Avatar 8:51pm
fleep:

Well, this solves a mystery for me. Old Paul Terry 'Farmer Al Falfa' silent cartoons were bought by Common Wealth and had library music added on, which is burned into my brain (and maybe yours). The opening music is a frantic jokey number and I never knew it had a name until today. It's Komic Kapers by Roger Roger. Thanks, FS!
www.youtube.com...
Avatar 8:53pm
Flash Strap:

Wow, that's so cool. It's actually really rare that I hear production library music that I already know in its natural habitat. But that's definitely the embryonic reason I love the stuff so much
Avatar 8:56pm
hyde:

I can't win because of a two minute web search! plus, Donovan is cool too. My internet is flaking something firce right now, so I'm gonna say thanks for the show and sign off.
Avatar 8:57pm
Flash Strap:

I mean, this stuff gets into all of us just by osmosis and media saturation. We are all already born knowing Raymond Scott's cartoon music, for example
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm
Gary:

Hyde, that article you found is hilarious
Avatar 8:58pm
Flash Strap:

bye Hyde! thanks for hangin out! Umiliani soon (but maybe Donovan first, I'm on a real kick)
Avatar 8:58pm
Flash Strap:

I gotta read it when this is over
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm

It's Carl Stalling's world. We were just born into it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm

Thank you Flash Strap! i will return.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm

The article is missing the first page or possibly two, but still a fun read, what's there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm

So excellent, really. Every minute of it. This show.
