This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Such a cool movie

I haven't seen it. But I have it downloaded and in my Plex server...just need to find time to watch it.

Fantastic Planet freaks me the fuck out. That's a very, very bad trip (for me) entirely without any chemicals whatsoever. Your mileage may vary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Uncle Michael:

Man, I gotta make some time for it.
Avatar 7:26pm

Yeah, I love it. I get pleasure from it for sure.

Hey folks... looks like I have another film to get around to.
Avatar 7:30pm

oh yeah, it's a singular pleasure. Surreal, erotic, horrifying

Surreal, erotic, horrifying? I'm in!

Flash Strap:

Hey Doug!
  7:33pm
Doug Schulkind:

Hey, Dr. Strap!
Avatar 7:34pm
Flash Strap:

Speaking of surreal, erotic, horrifying: I just saw The Red Shoes, and I can pretty much guarantee it's one of the best movies ever made, or ever will be made. (Also, it's the best ballet movie, but that's basically beside the point)
  7:39pm
patashnik:

When you described it as that, I thought of The Wall.
Avatar 7:40pm
Flash Strap:

oh boy, it is better than the wall, I promise. though very likely quite a bit less of a high school memory machine
  7:41pm
patashnik:

That's good enough for me. I'll check it out for sure.
Avatar 7:42pm
Flash Strap:

Seriously, I used to love The Wall so dearly, but I recently watched it for the first time in years with nothing but positive expectations, even though I knew I'd grown considerably out of it. I thought it would be mainly good nostalgia. It was very difficult. Not that it doesn't have some awesome crap in it, though.
  7:44pm
patashnik:

I only saw it for the first time a year or two ago. I thought it was worthwhile if nothing spectacular.

They're just fantastic. I still need to see Koyaanisqatsi and the like.

Those are great too. At least, Pow and Koy are great. Naqoyqatsi is pretty missable.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
listener james from westwood:

That's a relief.

In terms of obscure science fiction, the one film I caught during one of its few times being aired on TV was "The Lathe of Heaven." Ages ago, like early 80s or something.
Avatar 8:37pm
Flash Strap:

ok, i'd never heard of Left hand of Darkness before now. I just looked it up, it sounds incredible.

i wanna see that one. How was it, james?

Strange, as far as I can recall. I was an early adolescent and not as ready for it as I might have been like 5 years later than when I saw it. Clamor for it to be re-aired during the ensuing years was huge.

@hyde: I've seen it on the book's wikipedia page, sounds cool. I'm usually not that into fantasy sci-fi stuff, but I'm digging the book a lot.

Lots of references today, gonna have to revuse the comment board tomorrow to get to know them all
Avatar 8:50pm
Flash Strap:

Sounds like good weird literature Doca. I'm glad you brought it up tonight, I look forward to reading it. I usually don't read all that much sci-fi, but I love it when it's good
Avatar 8:54pm
ndbob:

checking in for a sec - the left hand of darkness is great
  8:55pm
doca:

Sci-fi is usually my safeguard genre. Whenever I don't know what to read I pick a sci-fi book.
Avatar 8:56pm
Flash Strap:

ah, for me, it's Raymond Chandler
Avatar 8:57pm
Flash Strap:

on that note, i got around to reading inherent vice and it was great. i know the go-to line is that it's lesser pynchon, which is basically accurate, but I fuckin loved it
  8:59pm
doca:

Lesser Pynchon is still Pynchon, and I dare any Pynchon fan say they don't like The Crying of Lot 49 eheh
Chandler and Hammett were also my safeguard choices, but it's been years I don't read any of them.
Avatar 9:00pm
hyde:

thanks Flash!
Avatar 9:02pm
Flash Strap:

Lot 49 is probably the best book I've ever read, and I've read it four or five times. Chandler is an actual, honest-to-god genius in my opinion, but I've always dragged my feet on getting into Hammett. Chandler's Long Goodbye is easily in my top five favorite books.
Avatar 9:02pm
Flash Strap:

and flicks for that matter.
Avatar 9:03pm
Flash Strap:

thank YOU, hyde!
Avatar 9:03pm
hyde:

@Flash CHandler is great, but the Hammett's are really good too. I've read all of 'em except Red Harvest.
Avatar 9:03pm
Flash Strap:

I want to read that one specifically, because of Yojimbo
