Speaking of surreal, erotic, horrifying: I just saw The Red Shoes, and I can pretty much guarantee it's one of the best movies ever made, or ever will be made. (Also, it's the best ballet movie, but that's basically beside the point)

Seriously, I used to love The Wall so dearly, but I recently watched it for the first time in years with nothing but positive expectations, even though I knew I'd grown considerably out of it. I thought it would be mainly good nostalgia. It was very difficult. Not that it doesn't have some awesome crap in it, though.

Strange, as far as I can recall. I was an early adolescent and not as ready for it as I might have been like 5 years later than when I saw it. Clamor for it to be re-aired during the ensuing years was huge.

Lesser Pynchon is still Pynchon, and I dare any Pynchon fan say they don't like The Crying of Lot 49 eheh
Chandler and Hammett were also my safeguard choices, but it's been years I don't read any of them.

Lot 49 is probably the best book I've ever read, and I've read it four or five times. Chandler is an actual, honest-to-god genius in my opinion, but I've always dragged my feet on getting into Hammett. Chandler's Long Goodbye is easily in my top five favorite books.
