Prince should make an album with Wolfeyes

that would really generate a WOW

I kind of like that Climax song! it's like C-grade "Cherish". but it sure isn't Prince or Kate Bush

dancing bear phases in and out of rhythm with Boredoms. BRILLIANT!

I liike the Climax song on a grade of better than Afternoon Delight

Who knew that Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn originally intended "I Fall in Love Too Easily" to be a song about narcolepsy?

The Climax track wouldn't have been out of place during EFD & Clay's AM throwdown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm

what is that, some type of bowed instrument? that totally makes this track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I knew a person who would tell me about her 'afternoon delight' so the song just has that extra wretch flavour.

P-90:

I've always been so into the Stop Making Sense movie that the soundtrack versions of all those songs are the definitive ones in my memory. Not that the "original versions" like this don't kick ass too; they kick lots and lots of ass.

@DCE: I think you're asking about the guitar synthesizers?

@DCE: that was when the Roland synth guitars were all the rage. They're completely analog which helps them sound real organic. They're the very same ones that were the foundation of the 1980's King Crimson sound.

Sam Shalabi! Saw him ages ago at Victo. His 2000 Luteness CD is one of my favorites.

Avatar 4:55pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

dean, love shalabi but i never even heard of that cd. which victo set were you at? the one with the donkeys by chance?
  4:59pm
Dean:

I went to several during the mid-'90s through 2000 or '01. I don't recall donkeys. Luteness is perhaps his first disk. A buddy, a prof at McGill who was a charter Victo attendee, knows Shalabi and recommended the disk. It's nothing like the psychedelic, feedback-laden, Middle Eastern-flavored material he played at Victo (and on the present playlist track). It's really aptly titled: almost lute-like plucking and futzing, reminiscent of Polwechsel.
Avatar 5:02pm
Caryn:

This is mixing quite nicely with the Black Sabbath coming from the tv.
Avatar 5:03pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

wow, i'd love to hear that.

he did a hilarious gig at victo where shalabi effect was on one side of the stage playing their middle eastern psychedelia alternating with the montreal band the donkeys playing stooges like songs on the other side of the stage. the donkeys were like six times louder than shalabi. back and forth they went. it was amazing.

is your friend at mcgill mike c, by chance?
Avatar 5:03pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

caryn, ha!
Avatar 5:04pm
Caryn:

Mixed less well with the Sting track I suddenly stumbled on while switching channels.
  5:05pm
Dean:

This is the one: http://fimav.qc.ca/en/archives/fimav-2001/

And speaking of Polwechsel, that Butcher/Charles/Dorner show was stunning, as was Poire_Z. B/C/D played so quietly that the most dynamic moments were the little bursts of spittle on the mouthpieces of their instruments.

Bummer. I missed the Donkeys split show, I guess.

No, my buddy is Lawrence J. Writes (or wrote) for Signal to Noise.
Avatar 5:07pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

OH! i know lawrence too! and 2001, that was the first year i went to victo! i went because otomo was playing and whenever he (or most people) come to nyc, they play with new yorkers. i wanted to hear *his* band, and then went back every year for a dozen or so.
  5:09pm
P-90:

That Shalabi/Donkeys thing sounds AWEsome. Right up my alley.
Avatar 5:09pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

it was amazing.

almost everyone hated it.
  5:09pm
Dean:

It's a happy thought that we crossed paths at Victo. I started school again that fall, have had kids, and thus haven't been able to return. I get reviews from Lawrence. He's a great guy.

Do you happen to recall the notorious Kim Gordon show of '01?

Caryn: Instead of grocery shopping, dress up as something on the last day of the month and ask people for stuff. Works well for my kids.
Avatar 5:19pm
