  10:59pm
recurring question:

where the hell does all this good music come from?
Avatar 11:03pm
BadGuyZero:

@Droll: I'm in some group shots. There was a whole scene with Al Jourgensen, Mike Scaccia and I stuffing dollar bills into the garter of a portly cross-dressing stripper that didn't make it into the U.S. version. Supposedly there's a longer version that aired on MTV Europe that has that scene and some other stuff that got cut.
Avatar 11:06pm
steve:

Droll - believe it or not, in actual small clubs with people paying, generally mixed in here and there with other less anthematic, more techno sounding stuff. the techno people have rediscovered noisy industrial. also the other day my coworker (who is early 30s) volunteered how excited he was about the new wax trax documentary and then we watched the trailer on his computer

@Matt: A couple of the Mogwai guys were with us. We started out at The Gingerman. The full band was there. So was author Irvine Welsh. We closed it out and then some of us went to the after-hours club. After that we went to The Weiners Circle. Stephen didn't tell us that the rude staff was part of the place's schtick. The Mogwai guys and I thought we were going to die. I think I even sent a tweet at the moment predicting our imminent doom. I said farewell and grabbed a cab after that.

I lived in ChIll until '92 and am only too familiar with that scene. I remember lots of exposed concrete and brick for aesthetics and maximum acoustic loudness. I shouldn't complain, clubs today easily use 50x more wattage on their sound systems -- they make it painfully loud from anywhere in the room.
Avatar 11:32pm
Droll:

Actually, the industrial bands typically had very good sound. Loud, but never at the expense of dynamics. I remember Ministry shows with 8 guys on stage playing everything was clear... and the band was ridiculously tight. Bill Rieflin's drum sounds still punch harder than almost any electronic drum machine.
