Though I would argue with the council that surely "rereading the poster" as they advise is doing something, and thus illegal?

For some reason, Dani House makes me think of Dani Filth. Well, I say "for some reason", but the reason is obvious (a name consisting of Dani + a noun).

Parents were also encouraged to dress as Kak then rush in on their young, sleeping children at 3am, and screech as loudly as they could: "Don't, don't, don't."'...

Speaking of weather, the weather over here is playing havoc with my dining plans. Heat wave is expected to last at least until the end of next week, and apart from ice and cold water, there are no foodstuffs that can be enjoyed cold. Well, I suppose the salad dressing can, but I'd prefer it with salad. A cold front should roll in for just a couple of hours a day so I could have soup without feeling like I'm being roasted alive.

G: Are you saying the peak ave. world temp. in recorded history was five years ago?
- My understanding is that in the U.S. - by May, around 1500 record high temp.s had already been set - for various places...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm
G:

For modern times where there are many worldwide temperature sensors constantly recording many thousands of sites, 1998 was the highest average temp year. It's been sideways or down since then. There's a lot we just don't understand about how the sun works yet, let alone the earth. Yeah, I won a science fair scholarship for sunspot research, back before puberty shifted me from science to the humanities.

- & 'Climate Change' is perhaps more accurate - or more usefully descriptive - than 'Global Warming'
- as some places @ some times may actually get cooler. Climate is a classic Chaotic System.
- They said Storms will get Fewer but Larger - which seems to be bearing out.
'Climate is what you expect, & weather is what you get.'
- MarkTwain
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
G:

It's really good to try to understand climate or anything else in the world better. It can be bad to jump to conclusions if the data isn't there yet to support one theory clearly over all the other possible theories. That's not science, that's religion.

βrian the MJ article doesn't go into the neurochemistry of rationalization, but it turns out the brain is rewarded with a massive flood of positive reward chemicals when people bend a contradictory statement into something that affirms their beliefs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm
G:

@Irwin: Like actually a lot of stuff I tell students, it maybe should kinda go without saying. But I have noticed that being clear about the obvious is actually pretty useful to people sometimes, if they are open (many people, not all, are). Because the obvious is not always clearly stated, unhappily...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
G:

For new data, look at worldwide temp stats available for the years 1998-2012. That's newer data than the older data that gets quoted a lot. :-)
Avatar 4:53pm
fleep:

Is an average indicative of outliers? 70 degrees and 50 degrees averages out to 60, but so do 100 and 20.

I never argue about religion. I'm too polite (and self-preserving). I'll be back after I do such important things as buy onions and garlic. :-)
Avatar 4:55pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- people are soundbite heads. We get the pronouncements - but it is not explained in detail - &/or we have no patience for details. (Science is after all increasingly complex.) Opinion rules. Ideology supercedes problemsolving.
- & who funds a study? Oh yes - that matters.
- & why should scientists be free from this dopamine rush of affirmation? They are not.
- If the highest temp.s ever were only five years ago...yeah - were they one degree below that - the rest of history - in those five years to now (barely just summer yet)?...
Avatar 4:59pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- we get the soundbite pronouncement
- but so very seldom the *why* this is *true*...
- Science *is* the contempo. Religion in this ImagoMundi (picture of the world) belief-system sense.

If you want first-hand, authoritative knowledge about a subject, you need to become an authority on that subject, which is a lot of work. Otherwise you have to decide whether to listen to the accredited authorities on that subject, which all of us tacitly do all the time. Who knows for sure that Napolean was an actual person?
