wasn't it clear already in the late 90s that self-termed web 2.0 was mainly a way to get "muppets" to volunteer to create and aggregate terabyte upon endless terabyte of web content for free, just to be "famous" -- which in turn in copiable, savable, and parsable for whatever reason forever, if nothing changes? on one of my liter. discussion lists back then there was a palo alto dude who was clanging the alarm about that nearly every week.

Caryn, The only "analysis" you see at FB is on behalf of deodorant, insurance and car companies, which is hardly representative of the information FB collects, mines, re-mines, re-re-mines, and sells to others to mine. Even if they suck today, they'll get better and they'll have more information by then, too. You do not have any say in the control of the records they keep on you, what they're used for, or how long they're kept.

Mark my words: In the very near future all commercial telecommunications will be operated and paid for by advertising companies. Google is already in the phone business, and they already transcribe phone messages. In the future, they will offer free phone service and pay for it by listening in on your conversation and sending you ads about your conversation topics later.

A co-worker today told me about his days as a telemarketer, and how they would get so bored with the job, they'd start making comedic calls with fake names. (Using their mobile phones, not the headsets, to avoid having the calls recorded.) And how they'd especially look forward to Friday afternoons, when the bosses would go home early, and they could goof off on the phone very freely.
