Nice to have WFMU back (at least for now). If I suddenly stop commenting for a really long time, just take it as read that the weird atmospheric disturbances are back and I've lost my Internet connection.

Hi Caryn--hope that doesn't mean magnetic polarity is getting set to reverse soon!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm

@Matt: hmm... if this was a disaster movie, someone would soon uncover a heretofore unknown Mayan calendar showing that, yep, it wasn't December 2012, but April 2013 when the world comes to an end.

This song title seems strangely apt for the conversation...

BTW, got the last of my 2012 Marathon swag today (well, apart from Scharpling's stuff and the 7SD porn tape). Lovely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Caryn:

The first 3 albums are apparently meant for the guy in "Memento". Once you forget Annette in 15 minutes, let me reintroduce her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Always some "revealing" device like that.
And Merry Swagmas! Except for those two, which I'm also waiting for. But I'd like to thank Ken and Andy for their premium--they were so late with theirs, I was given a consolation premium in place of the porn commentary. So thanks guys, for allowing me to fit Dan Bodah's premium in as well! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
Caryn:

@Matt: that's true. Thanks, 7SD, for allowing me to take Fabio's premium home!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm
rrg:

Ken's premium was also a no-show. I was given an alternative choice.

Only five of us have spoken here today. Who will be number 6?

Fine selection! Fabio's OST was in my original swag, I've enjoyed it much.

Listening Out There:

the word for today is "mangopaunos"
?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
Caryn:

@rrg: true, but I'm not thankful for that, so I resentfully avoided mentioning it.

For some reason, I take the playing of any Billy Bragg to be a nod to the passing of Thatcher.
  3:27pm
Laura L:

Are you going to be playing any Margaret Thatcher records today too, Irwin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
Irwin:

@Caryn: Nope, picked that song to play b4 Maggie passed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
Alison Porchnik:

I didn't like my alternative choice to the Ken and Andy's sex dvd. Oh well, caveat emptor is a given with 7SD.

Hey there Irwin and everyone else. Speaking of premiums and also Annette, one of the first things I won or received during a marathon was Muscle Beach Party. Vinyl of course. Still in the house somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm

Apparently, Thatcher's favourite "pop/rock" track was "How Much Is That Doggie in The Window", so if you've got Amanda's version of that or something, go nuts, Irwin.

Some time ago, there was an FMU listener poll to determine the worst songs of the mid-20th century. All-time worst was "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window."

Fine show so far, as always, Irwin. Kind of sounds a little more than usual like Charlie's stuff. Since I know you and he are long-time friends, I'm sure you will take that as a compliment (and it was meant as one).

Thatcher was originally a research chemist. Does that explain her taste in music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
Rich in Washington:

Irwin, when is that Raymond Scott remix album coming out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
Caryn:

@Snortley: hey, if that's true, how come Ken hasn't been playing it to death on his show? Btw, perfectly understandable song for Thatcher to like. A song about a person's simple desire to carry out a monetary exchange for some canine goods seen in a shop window. Very free market.

Are we hearing Mr. Raymond Scott himself here?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm

Gotta say, Irwin, I didn't think you played Bragg in any way because of Thatcher's passing, but only that hearing Bragg right now just automatically made me think that what with every single person apparently needing to state their opinion on Thatcher, I'm reasonably sure Bragg's said something by now. And how I can't be bothered to find out what that is.

Regarding morays, I was recently at the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas and partook in snorkeling the aquarium. The s'mores discussion leads to a wondering of the current US fast food and other trend for bacon. The bacon sundae at BK, the glazed donut bacon & eggs sandwich at DD, the bacon-flavoured condoms and bacon-scented cleaning products... Not to mention the various bacon sites people have linked to on WFMU comments boards. I fear a bacon s'more is looming in the near future.

Time was (and still is) one of my favorite songs growing up! I first heard it in Hal Ashby's film Coming Home, playing during a suicide scene. Thanks for playing it, Irwin.

It'll be in the archive if you missed it.

Listening to it on a treadmill? Is it a hifi treadmill?

@G: that's when a cannibalistic serial killer manages to get cold cuts made from his victims on sale at his local deli. I recommend them on a bagel.

No more psychedelic overload? But there's still almost an hour to go.

Damn weird!!! KSCU is playing a song that sounds like a muted version of this song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm
G:

Caryn reminds me: If you have a chance, see "Eddy the Sleepwalking Cannibal." It's been in NYC since last week, and will disappear again soon, I'm sure. I was in a theatre with ten people watching it Saturday afternoon, two of whom I had gone with. -- It's Canadian, if that helps.

I hate when I learn play along to a song in a certain way and later realize I'm playing it wrong. It's so hard to unlearn and re-learn how to play it. I can imagine Irwin is struggling with the humiliation of decades of playing it wrong, not sure why he drew our attention to his mistake.

Doesn't help.

That was my CanCon job for the week.

I don't know if I should salute the parents who named their kid Sinclair. Unless the "John, Sinclair" bit was actually "John Sinclair", in which case, I might like an autograph.

@rrg: Our dead air is better than their air! (Well except the oxygen part--it kind of keeps us alive...)

Margaret Thatcher, Lili Pulitzer and Annette Funciello are standing in line at the Pearly Gates. Just inside, Billie Holiday is sitting at a cafe table, polishing off the last bit of her birthday cake. She looks up and says, "There goes the neghborhood."

All right, all right, already. I'll get the Jenn Grant album.

Ir, Do you know if Alasdair came up with an alternate date for coming to the U.S.?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm

It's spelled "Irwin", Laura.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm

@LL: No word from his US label. They'd contact if they had news. He loves WoofMoo.

And you can call her Luara or Lurau, becuase she loves typoes.

I thought Wirin went with sushi. Typical graphic error.

Which makes me think of Pineapple Princess.

Come on, one more Annette song. There are still 30 minutes remaining.

I like the EAS messages for NY/NJ, it's so anachronistic over the internetz -- it's quaint. Especially because those rackmount printer systems are so obviously not from the internetz era.

Big percussion show today (except for the the Anette set). Thanks Erwyn, "see" you next week.

@rrg--that sounds like Teller to me. Some years ago I published "When I'm Dead All This Will be Yours!," Teller's book about his dad, Joe.

We kept the Hollywood Walk sentence in Ebert's wikipedia lede. It's not nothing. Not the Pulitzer for Criticism (second sentence). But not nothing.
