Listener comments!

  12:02pm
DCE:

this is beautiful!
  12:14pm
Van in DC:

Happy Monday to you Irene and to everyone
  12:22pm
DCE:

it's been a very very busy Monday so far, but hopefully I'm getting the best of it
  12:50pm
pierre:

Bonjour Irene, and listeners

Need some soul healing here; thanks a lot as it is doing me some good.
  12:57pm
Cheri Pi:

Bonjour Pierre, Irene, all the DC's
  12:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

Bonjour to Irene, Cheri Pi, DCE, Van in DC! (I myself am a near-DC)
  1:00pm
pierre:

salut Cheri Pi, how are you doing ?

salut Matt from Springfield; and DC's too
  1:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: How wonderful that Irene's acoustic and eclectic selections are there to sooth us on the most brutal day of the week! Karmic justice.
  1:02pm
Chris from DC:

Matt, was never quite sure if it was that Springfield. Great set here.
  1:04pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sure is, Chris! Hello, to another DC..

Liking the playlist orange too, Irene. More a Valencia or Florida to Irwin's tangerine.
  1:11pm
DCE:

oh that Mary--she can sure play the guitar!
  1:26pm
Van in DC:

Oftentimes I think there are more of us DC area folks than NY NJ ;)

Lovely set that was Irene!
  1:32pm
DCE:

urge for going!
  1:32pm
DCE:

"all-time best fall/change song"!
  1:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yay Tom Rush!!
Yay "Urge For Going"! :) It's def that time of year here
  1:34pm
DCE:

"the trill that chills"
  1:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: You were on the boards with me when I first heard Tom Rush, like 2 years ago! :)

@Van: Quite the DC-area presence! Though I heard there are a lot of local NJ/NY listeners who listen radio only, the boards understate their presence.
  1:37pm
Chris from DC:

Nice, never heard this Tom Rush before.
  1:38pm
DCE:

Matt, you have a memory like 10,000 elephants with computer chips
  1:39pm
DCE:

the older I get, the more I get Richard Thompson. When I was a young-un he just sounded like an old-un to me.
  1:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Mainly because the setting here today is similar as the season, website, song, artist and commenter(s) as when I first heard. Never forgotten Tom Rush since!

After all, the Pidge tells us to "always, remember..." ;)
  1:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha! Good one from Tim Rose!
  1:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

And "Trouble"!! This was amazing as the penultimate song in "Harold and Maude".
  1:49pm
Listening Out There:

Decent Yosuf Islam...
  1:50pm
pierre:

does anybody had a blank right after that Cat Stevens song ?
  1:51pm
Listening Out There:

Stevens converted to Islam in December 1977[8] and adopted the name Yusuf Islam the following year.

The singer attracted controversy in 1989, during an address to students at London's Kingston University, where he was asked about the fatwa calling for the death of author Salman Rushdie. The media interpreted his response as support for the fatwa.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_stevens
  1:52pm
Cheri Pi:

Yes I had a blank after Cat Stevens, then Neil Young returned
  1:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Harvest Moon" is great--especially good if you have to do some floor sweeping!

The riff is a slower version of the Everly Brothers "Walk Right Back". Another good one worth listening to.
  1:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yeah, the blank was probably just an error in switching to the next track. All's well that ends well.
  1:56pm
Mike East:

I think the Harvest Moon album was the first Neil Young I ever listened to knowing it was Neil Young. It kinda skewed my perception of him for a while...although I would bet not as much as someone who heard Trans first.
  1:56pm
Listening Out There:

RE Neil Young: His recent memoir is a good read. Wart 'n all.

http://www.powells.com/biblio/18-9780399159466-0
  1:57pm
dale:

urge for going, a child's song and driving wheel are the best rush tunes. end of story.
  1:58pm
Listening Out There:

er, "Warts and all" :) It's an idiosyncratic memoir, which reflects him well, IMO
  2:00pm
Mike East:

@dale - I like Yyz, myself.
  2:02pm
dale:

wrong rush i think
  2:04pm
dale:

there's a dvd (netflix maybe?) of neil within the last couple of years solo at massey hall in toronto. some footage of him and his brother in their hometown talking about childhood there. it was pretty good if you're a fan
  2:05pm
Mike East:

@dale - probably right.

@Irene - Harold & Maude is a must see. Its like the Graduate, except the woman is older, the boy is younger, and its Cat Stevens instead of Simon & Garfunkel.
  2:06pm
Van in DC:

Wow, yeah, our hippy 20-something gorgeous babysitter used to feed us Cat constantly. Wow did we all have a crush on her :)
  2:06pm
joe:

Harold and Maude is a must see.
  2:08pm
slugluv1313:

just tuning in to hear "Harvest Moon" -- just too perfect (and to this day, still get all teary-eyed whenever i hear it) . . . "Urge For Going," so perfect for these cold November days . . . and "Trouble" always gets me in the guts (the Kristen Hersh's version is pretty soul-splaying too) . . . WONDERFUL show, Irene, THANK YOU!!! will have to catch up on the archives :) (and YES!!! "Harold and Maude" definitely a must see!!! i did not see it until somewhat recently myself, although i do recall when it was released when i was a kid)
  2:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

Harold and Maude is a lovely "hippie movie"--I highly rec! Cat Stevens soundtrack, mostly his existing songs but "If You Want To Sing Out" was written especially for the film.

@Van: My Dad said how pretending an interest in Cat Stevens was a great way to meet girls then ;)
  2:11pm
slugluv1313:

@ Van -- ha ha! lucky you! high school biology teacher used to play a lot of Cat Stevens for us in class while we were doing lab work . . .
  2:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: The Magic Christian I think would be another good "hippie movie", albeit a surreal as opposed to lovely one. And Badfinger/Thunderclap Newman on the soundtrack!

I like how many movies used to have their soundtracks "provided" by a particular good artist. Makes for a coherent, whole scheme to go with the film.
  2:14pm
dale:

yay moodies! justin could write a song
  2:15pm
DCE:

oh, great Moody Blues tune!
  2:15pm
DCE:

cool, it's a medley!
  2:16pm
dale:

segue into the pinder stuff....
  2:16pm
DCE:

I love how all their album sides from this time period were all mixed together
  2:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: That's why DJ Julie played this entire album (actually I think it was "In Search of the Lost Chord") one night, because all the songs on a side blend into each other with the MBs!
  2:21pm
dale:

i was watching some youtubes of denny laine led moodies - crazy difference
  2:22pm
Listening Out There:

The Moody Blues track...is it mellotron in the background?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm
Irene:

Yes, a lot of the Moody Blues' albums were stung together as a suite. I have a particular "acid" memory attached to that Moodys medley... :)
  2:23pm
dale:

yes - pinder was the mellotron master
  2:23pm
Mike East:

@MfS - In that same vein (namely the Peter Sellers vein), I watched "What's New Pussycat" last weekend. Also recommended. You can guess who does the title track of that one.
  2:24pm
dale:

  2:24pm
Eric:

I've been just a little bit obsessed with this song this past week. Love "Head"
  2:24pm
Van in DC:

Ooh, I'll have to catch up on that Dark Night show :)
  2:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

While we're still on the subject of "hippie movies" and their soundtracks! :)
Jack Nicholson and Bob Rafelson were the main writers for "Head".
  2:25pm
pete g:

Hi Irene!!! Play that Porpoise baby!!! And, of course, always great to hear Moore & Sons ;)
  2:25pm
Hrundi V. Bakshi:

Birdie Num Num.
  2:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: Thanks, I've been wanting to see that, as well as "Tiger Lily", the early Woody Allen movies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm
Irene:

Yes, they were maybe the earliest adoptors of the mellotron. There's an interesting documentary on The Mellotron which discusses the problems of making one of those things work on the road.
  2:26pm
MD:

That song is so beautiful...I want to hear it on my death bed!!! ( the porpoise song)
  2:29pm
DCE:

whoa, early Vangelis!
  2:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Van: August 2! https://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/46764

Btw, listener "Dan in Falls Church" and I are trying to get a northern VA Meetup going--trying to meet in Arlington around Dec 8 or so. Interested?
  2:30pm
slugluv1313:

sadly, at one point i sold all my Moody Blues LPs -- so do want to get them back again . . . and "Porpoise Song" segueing in to "Aegian Sea" PERFECT!!!!! THANK YOU AGAIN, IRENE!!!!!!!!
  2:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Others in the area are welcome to, but because some NoVAns were reluctant to go into the District for a social, I'm trying to string together a NoVA Meetup first, and if that goes well, a larger DC Area Meetup will be planned. Stay tuned folks...
  2:33pm
slugluv1313:

@ DCE, i know what you mean about Richard Thompson! i never really saw him as an old-un, always *kinda* liked him (especially the Richard and Linda Thompson stuff), but i totally appreciate him more and more the "older" i get :)
  2:33pm
InBrkly:

This set makes me want to request some Comus but I think all of their songs are like 10 minutes long.
  2:35pm
Van in DC:

Holy smokes, just for an instant during the opening of this track just now I could've sworn it was about to rain from Candy Clouds! (courtesy Hans Dulfer) :)
  2:35pm
DCE:

fiery fiery fiery
  2:37pm
Van in DC:

@Matt - just saw your message there - thanks! And yes I would be interested!
  2:38pm
asparagus:

Best set of music ever?
  2:38pm
Van in DC:

mmmmm, in DC, are you thinking Adams Morgan...? Gosh I would so not mind foraging at Amsterdam Falafel again :)
  2:39pm
dale:

having nothing to do with anything other than the title of the song being played, another must see film is friedkin's 'sorcerer'
  2:39pm
DCE:

got my vote!
  2:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

Great Van! Dan was thinking meeting at a CD Cellar in Arlington, it has a bar above it and that seems to be a good central location for us Virginians.

I'll announce on Meetup.com when it's official--and I'll be sure to spread the word here!
  2:41pm
Chris from DC:

Many possibilities in DC. If you all end up at Galaxy Hut in December that might work.
  2:41pm
dale:

some embryo would go down smooth after this
  2:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

DC will prob be the next one--there's an even larger community of listeners based there (BSI, dc pat, Denise, Chris, etc), and I don't know yet where might be a good venue for that. BSI mentioned a good bar once (and I've been to it), but it's pretty far up in Columbia Heights, past U St. But U St. would prob be the "central" meeting place for that one.
  2:43pm
Chris from DC:

Dodge City if you're thinking U St.
  2:45pm
dale:

anyone remember a place called 'the beat' in portchester? just down the street from the lifesavers factory
  2:46pm
DCE:

is this off the Winds of Change album? I think so...
  2:48pm
DCE:

guess not!
  2:48pm
asparagus:

Who is the drummer on this Frampton? Amazing tone
  2:51pm
will:

Irene, you're some psychedelic today! Spinning, Will J
  2:52pm
InBrkly:

Pledged.
  2:53pm
Snortley:

@Dale: Just remember Rapson's.
  2:54pm
DCE:

oh hell yeah! you're really rolling today, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm
Irene:

Thanks for all the kind words everybody. Frampton's drummer, by the way, was John Headley-Down. Catch you next week at noon!
  2:56pm
Van in DC:

Many thanks for a great show Irene...always a most welcome opening to the week's journey!
  2:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

A most wonderful assortment of songs today Irene! Thanks for your "antidote", it always works!

I'll keep in touch with you DC and VA listeners before issuing an official Meetup!
  3:00pm
Alan Cynic:

Harold & Maude.....yes!! Others in the hippy vein....'Private Road', 'Zabriskie Point' and 'If' ?
  3:00pm
Listening Out There:

Thx, Irene! Great program...
