I lived in the UK in 1971-74. I actually remember the 10538 Overture, which I hadn't thought of in decades till you played it. So it was at least a minor hit over there. But in 1972 or so, Roy Wood and Move were the ones lying on their backs playing cellos on the "Top of the Pops" Thursday night chart-countdown telly show...

Looked it up. That single peaked at no. 9 on UK singles chart in summer 72. ELO did not get popular over here in the US till maybe more like the mid 70s.

Tx, I'll look it up... Many of the acts over in the UK in the early 70s were trying for a weird/distinctive visual look. That showed up in one way in glam, in another way in prog (with Gabriel costumes and slide projections above the stage), Bowie of course -- and yes, Lynne and Wood went for an original visual look. The outlandish-looking Wood was totally compelling if you were a teen TV watcher in the UK in 1972, as I can testify personally!
